  2. Overview • General Educational Development (GED) offers a high school diploma to students who pass a series of five tests that take 7.5 hours to complete.

  4. General Information • Test questions require you to use general knowledge and thinking skills. All questions are multiple choice except Part II of the Language Arts, Writing test, which requires you to write an essay. • Employers and colleges accept the GED Tests as the equivalent of a high school diploma.

  5. General Information • Individuals who are 18 years of age or within 60 days of their 18th birthday may test regardless of school enrollment status. Seventeen-year-olds may test under special circumstances. • The tests are available throughout California, mostly in adult schools.

  6. While you are in a LACOE Program… • LACOE offers the GED every month at Central Juvenile Hall, Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall, and Camp Challenger • Students must be 17 (In regular school districts students must be 18) • Students must have reading scores of at least 7th grade or better • Students must pass the GED pre-test which is offered in all JCCS placements

  7. LACOE Testing Criteria The following criteria must be met to qualify for the GED program while in a LACOE operated program: Students must demonstrate high school level academic skills in English and mathematics. Students should have no reasonable expectation of completing high school on time. Interested students, 16.5 years and older, will be given a GED Pre-Test by the designated GED teacher to determine that minimum passing scores have been met in Science, Social Studies, Language Arts/Reading, Language Arts/Writing, and Mathematics/Algebra. Students must be 17.0 at the time of testing and have a birth certificate as proof.
