  1. Martian Radiation Environment Alenia Spazio, C. Lobascio

  2. Martian Radiation Environment RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACTIVITIES • Review up-to-date Mars mission scenarios (Aurora, US Vision for Space Exploration), including proposed vehicle concepts • Analyse existing data from radiation instruments on interplanetary missions, in particular those providing info on directionality of SPEs. Provide recommendations on additional measurements to be taken • Define reference model(s) for GCR and SPE radiation environment as a function of helioradial distance • Define Geant4 validation strategy for Mars atmosphere attenuation models • Provide the radiation environment applicable for the design of electronics, in the form typical of environmental specs (LET spectra, NIEL, etc.), for Mars orbit and surface • Analyse Mars local magnetic field and relevant effects on radiation • Provide analysis of uncertainties (environment and modelling) • Review, analyse and test in accelerators novel radiation shielding materials proposed for vehicles and habitats in Europe and US • Proceed with analysis of active shielding concepts, also reviewing recent US concepts for surface habitat
