  1. Aim: How will Ophelia’s death bring about a culmination of events? Do Now: How do you think Hamlet will react to Ophelia’s death? HW: Read Act 5, Scene 1.

Ruthless Claudius • How does Claudius use and manipulate Laertes own grief and anger? • What is the plan for Hamlet? • Laertes will challenge Hamlet to a fencing duel. • Laertes will be fighting with a sharp sword – able to wound. • The tip of the sword will contain poison. • If Hamlet avoids getting wounded or even grazed by the sword, Claudius will be ready with a poisoned cup.

  3. Ophelia’s Death • Why was Ophelia doomed? What pressures did she face • Why are flowers attached to the image of Ophelia? • Ophelia sings in the river as she slowly sinks to her watery death. How did Ophelia go into her death?

  4. Remembering Ophelia • Ophelia will have a funeral, but it will not be without drama. Let’s take a moment and eulogize her and remember this most innocent character in this tragedy full of sinful, vengeful characters. • Take on the perspective of ONE of the following: • Hamlet • Gertrude • Laertes • Yourself
