Words • Antonyms: Words with opposite meaning • Compound modifier: Two words combined to act as an adjective • Compound word: Two or more words combined to create a new or more specific word • Hyphen: A horizontal bar character used to indicate a split or incomplete word • Hyphenation zone: the maximum space Word allows between a word and the right margin without inserting a hyphen • Synonyms: Words with the same meaning • Thesaurus: A listing of words with synonyms and antonyms

  9. Status Bar Book Icon • Located in the lower left corner. • If all words are correct it has a red check mark • If document contains errors, a red “x” is display • Open any document and make changes that are not correct or key some words incorrectly.

Correct as you type • Right click wordselect appropriate word from short-cut menu and click it • Words can be added to dictionary or ignored • When added to dictionary the word no longer will appear as misspelled • When ignored; underline is removed from that occurrence only unless you ignore All

  13. Caution!!!!! • Spell check and grammar check are not always correct. • Word automatically correct many spelling mistakes as soon as you press the spacebar • Question? • Why would words spelled correctly appear with red wavy lines under them?

  17. Using the Thesaurus • Improves writing by helping you eliminate repetitive use of common words and choose more descriptive words • Word uses thesaurus to look up synonyms, definitions, and antonyms for any word • Results are displayed in the Research Task Pane

  19. Hyphenation • Dividing a word into parts that will not fit • By default hyphenation is set to none • Words that are too long wrap to the next line • Only hyphenated words like first-class that fall at the end of a line will break automatically at the hyphen • You can manually hyphenate words

  20. Lets Practice • Click fileHyphenation • Manually hyphenate long words by clicking the hyphenate button and manual • Word searches the document and display words that can be broken in the manual hyphenation dialogue box

  22. Non-Breaking Space • Use these if you want to keep the last word in a paragraph from wrapping to the next line. • Useful in Web and e-mail addresses to eliminate awkward breaks • Press ctrl + shift + space

  23. Project 23 and 24 • Project information will instruct you to key some information incorrectly so you can use the spelling and grammar checker 
