  3. Nathaniel Hawthorne 1804 - 1864

  4. Background Born in Salem, Massachusetts, lived in genteel poverty in a household with Puritan ideals, raised by his mother and relatives (father died when he was 4) Plagued by unhappiness and self doubt as a writer Graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine in 1825 Happy marriage to Sophia Peabody in 1842, 3 children

  5. The Scarlet Letter, published in 1850, brought him recognition as an author

  6. Romantic Period 1800-1855 The Romantic Period of American Literature involved the following ideas: 1. return to nature 2. belief in goodness of humanity 3. artist as a supremely individual creator 4. senses and emotions over reason and intellect

  7. The Scarlet Letter is American Romantic literature because it is set in a remote past (the Puritan era 200 years prior to Hawthorne’s time) it deals with the interior psychology of individual characters
