  2. What could be a problem when trying to write out the distances of the planets from the sun? • THINK • PAIR • SHARE

  3. Sometimes when numbers are very large or very small it can be difficult to keep track of the place value. • Therefore, we use SCIENTIFIC NOTATION • Let’s practice writing the distances from the planet to the Sun in scientific notation!

  4. I will do the first planet: Mercury The distance is 58,000,000 In scientific notation this would be: 5.8 x 10 7 How did I do that? Can you come up with a rule for writing numbers in scientific notation?

  5. To write a number in scientific notation: • 1. Count the number of spaces to move the decimal so that there is one number in front of it. 58,000,000. 5.8,000,000 • DROP ALL OF THE ZEROS! 5.8 • Multiply by a power of 10. (the exponent is the same number of SPACES you moved the decimal) 5.8 x 10 7
