Joshua 5It’s a new landIt’s a new beginning

(Josh 5:1 NKJV) So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over,

(Josh 5:1 NKJV) So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over,

that their heart melted; and there was

no spirit in them any longer because

of the children of Israel.

(Josh 5:2-3 NKJV) At that time the LORD said to Joshua, "Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time." {3} So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

(Josh 5:3 NKJV) So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

So how is this a Spiritual new beginning?

Notice how Paul compares circumcision and baptism

((Col 2:11-12 NKJV) In Him you were also circumcisedwith the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,

Notice how Paul compares circumcision and baptism

((Col 2:11-12 NKJV) . . . by the circumcision of Christ, {12} buried with Him in baptism,in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

((Col 2:11-12 NKJV) . . . by the circumcision of Christ, {12} buried with Him in baptism,in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

So thinking in reverse order, time wise, circumcision was, for them, what baptism is for us.

(Josh 5:3 NKJV) So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

But what about

“flint knives”?

in the lately discovered islands this is found to be a common case

But what about “flint knives”?

-- Adam Clarke

Before the use of iron was common, all the nations of the earth had their edge-tools made of stones, flints, etc. Our ancestors in these countries made their arrow and spear-heads of flint: these I have often seen turned up by the plough. -- Adam Clarke

In the lately discovered islands this is found to be a common case.

so why not steel knives

But what about “flint knives”?

But we cannot suppose that at the time here referred to the Israelites were destitute of iron, and were therefore obliged to use knives made of stone or flint, their different manufactures in the wilderness prove that they must have had both iron and steel. -- Adam Clarke

So why not steel knives?

so why not steel knives15

Why then use knives made of stone? Probably it was unlawful to use metal of any kind in this religious rite; and indeed this seems likely from the circumstance of Zipporah (Exo_4:25) taking a sharp stone and circumcising her son; and we find, from the most ancient and authentic accounts, that the Egyptians considered it unlawful or profane to use any kind of metal to make incisions in the human body, when preparing it for embalming;

Bible Answer?I really don’t know of one, but there are other answers that are hinted at, but not clear. How about this scripture: (Exo 20:25 NKJV) \'And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it.

So why not steel knives?

so why not steel knives18

Bible Answer? (Exo 20:25 NKJV) \'And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it. Hewn stone would seem to imply steel of some kind, but God gives no explanation as why you have profaned it.

So why not steel knives?

But was it really the second time?

(Josh 5:2 NKJV) At that time the LORD said to Joshua, "Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time.”

But was it really the second time?

(Josh 5:4 NKJV) And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: All the people who came out of Egypt who were males, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way, after they had come out of Egypt.

Joshua 5It’s a new landIt’s a new beginningHow about a Spiritual new beginning

But was it really the second time?

(Josh 5:5 NKJV) For all the people who came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness, on the way as they came out of Egypt, had not been circumcised.

So we are asking, “How is this a second time?

An explanation by Albert Barnes:

An expla“Circumcise again ...” - i. e. make that which once was a circumcised people but is not so now, once more a circumcised people.

it s a new land it s a new beginning
It’s a new landIt’s a new beginning
  • (Josh 5:6 NKJV) For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD; to whom the LORD swore that He would not show them the land which the LORD had sworn to their fathers that He would give us, "a land flowing with milk and honey."

How did they get here?

it s a new land it s a new beginning24
It’s a new landIt’s a new beginning
  • (Josh 5:7-8 NKJV) Then Joshua circumcised their sons whom He raised up in their place; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way. {8} So it was, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they stayed in their places in the camp till they were healed.

Now it’s time to move on.

It’s a new landIt’s a new beginning
  • (Josh 5:7-8 NKJV) . . . for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.
  • (Gen 17:14 NKJV) "And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant."

It must have been a time of great forgiveness!

it s a new beginning
It’s a new beginning

And yes, there is hope for such a person!

  • (Josh 5:9 NKJV) Then the LORD said to Joshua, "This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

(Gen 17:14 NKJV) "And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.“

Gilgal—so close to Jericho!

  • (Josh 5:9 NKJV) Then the LORD said to Joshua, "This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

It’s a new beginningIt’s Passover Time
  • (Josh 5:10 NKJV) Now the children of Israel camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the plains of Jericho.

How Fitting. The original Passover saw their parents delivered from Egypt. Now they are realizing what it was all about.

Freedom, and a new land.

it s a new beginning it s passover time but it is a new spiritual beginning

  • (Josh 5:10 NKJV) Now the children of Israel camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the plains of Jericho.

How Appropriate. The Passover was a religious ceremony. Worship was placed before war and conquest.

  • (Josh 5:11 NKJV) And they ate of the produce of the land on the day after the Passover, unleavened bread and parched grain, on the very same day.

Nothing is mentioned, but think! What entitles them to the food of the land? Did they purchase the food, or have they taken it as conquers?

they had loathed the manna now it s over
They had loathed the manna. Now it’s over!
  • (Num 11:4 NKJV) Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: "Who will give us meat to eat?
they had loathed the manna now it s over34
They had loathed the manna. Now it’s over!
  • (Num 11:5-6) "We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; {6} "but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!"
but those that loathed the manna never entered the promised land

no more manna
No More Manna!
  • (Josh 5:12 NKJV) Then the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten the produce of the land; and the children of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate the food of the land of Canaan that year.

  • (Josh 5:12 NKJV) Then the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten the produce of the land; and the children of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate the food of the land of Canaan that year.

But those who complained the most never ate the bread of Canaan

Who is really in charge?
  • (Josh 5:14 NKJV) So He said,

And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, "What does my Lord say to His servant?"

"No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come."

who is really in charge41
Who is really in charge?
  • (Josh 5:15 NKJV) Then the Commander of the Lord\'s army said to Joshua, "Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy." And Joshua did so.

  • (Exo 3:5 NKJV) Then He said, "Do not draw near this place.Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground."

And We must remember!
  • (Exo 3:5 NKJV) Then He said, "Do not draw near this place.Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground."
  • Yes, you remember when God called Moses to go to Egypt to lead His people out.

Who is really in charge?
  • (Josh 5:15 NKJV) Then the Commander of the Lord\'s army said to Joshua, "Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy." And Joshua did so.
  • Now the Lord is speaking through “the Commander of the Lord\'s army,” and Joshua is ready to lead under God.
