Background to the FTGA… • Established in 2007, we are here toprovide governors with the knowledge, the confidence and the voice they need to make a differencein their trusts • support governors in their role • provide development and training • offer critical information • offer country-wide networking

Health and Social Care Act 2012 • The general duties of the council of governors are: • To hold the non-executive directors individually and collectively to account for the performance of the board of directors, and • To represent the interests of members of the corporation as a whole and the interests of the public.

  6. Code of Governance • Canvassing members’ opinions • Governors should ensure that the opinions of their members are canvassed. • Appointed governors should canvass the opinion of others within the stakeholder body they represent.

  8. How can you canvass members views? • Set up a special email address and telephone line for the members to contact the governors/trust • Attend member events • ‘Surgery’ style sessions • Governor’s own networks • Constituency meeting • Surveys

  9. Table Discussions • 2 – 3 scenarios per table and 20 minutes to answer questions: • How would you resolve these scenarios? • Who would you speak to at your trust? • What are the step by step actions you would take?
