Ecosystem Succession: From Pioneer Species to Climax Communities

Learn about the process of primary succession and deflected succession in ecosystem development, from pioneer species to climax communities. Explore the stages of succession and understand how human interactions can impact the ecosystem's development.

  1. Module 6 – Ecosystems: Succession Equipment: Spec: 6.3.1: (d) the process of primary succession in the development of an ecosystem To include succession from pioneer species to a climax community AND deflected succession. • Pg.279-281 Handouts:

  2. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Starter • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species Give back assessment.

  3. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Primary succession occurs when organisms colonize a lifeless habitat. Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Succession Succession is the gradual change in an ecosystemover time. • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species During succession, the organisms within an ecosystem change its abiotic conditions. Secondary succession occurs when organisms re-colonize a devastated ecosystem. This allows better adapted organisms to colonize the area, replacing its current inhabitants.

  4. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Succession • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species How does succession happen?

  5. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Succession • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species Ecological succession – Khan Academy Annotate your diagrams:

  6. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Sand dunes are an example of how succession can occur in many stages, at the same time in the same place. Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Stages of Succession • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species Pond succession example Q. How do these levels changes over each area?

  7. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Stages of Succession • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species

  8. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Stages of Succession

  9. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Deflected succession Deflected Succession – Any time that succession is interfered with or stopped by human interactions. Ex: Golf course: Cutting various parts of the course stops the land from fully growing. • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species Deflected succession often results in the ecosystem not reaching its climax community. If an ecosystem does not reach its climax community, it will result in a sub-climax community known as a plagioclimax. Prevented lawn mowing not allowing more than grass to grow.

  10. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Climax communities The final stage of succession, where the largest and most complex community of plants & animals establishes themselves – the climax community. • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species Ex 1: In temperate climates (plenty of water and mild temperatures), the climax community would be large trees. Ex 2: In polar climates (very cold temperatures), the climax community would only contain herbs & shrubs, as more complex organisms wouldn’t have the resources (minerals in soil, time) to develop.

  11. Succession L.O. to describe how ecosystems are established and developed. Module 6 Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Tasks STARTER Succession Deflected succession Climax communities Exam practise Starter Exam practise Complete the exam practice provided. • Key terms • Succession • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax community • Deflected succession • Pioneer species
