  1. Taxonomy:

  2. Taxonomy • The science of classification • Classification is important in biology because it allows scientists to be able to distinguish between different organisms (Species level) • It also allows similar organisms to be grouped together and helps us to look at how they might have evolved (Kingdom-Genus)

  3. Example: Domestic Dog • Kingdom: Animalia – all animals • Phylum: Chordata –have a vertebrae (or backbone) • Class: Mammalia – mammals (have fur and are warm-blooded • Order: Carnivora – eat meat • Family: Canidae – wolf-like carnivores (includes wolves, foxes, jackals, coyotes, and dogs) • Genus:Canis – includes wolves, dogs, coyotes, and jackals • Species: lupis – Gray Wolf • Subspecies:familiares – domesticated form of the wolf, or dog

  5. Two Wheels Four Wheels

  6. Of the Four Wheels—let’s classify them further. . . Truck Car

  7. Let’s classify the cars further. . . 4-doors 2-doors

  9. And finally—let’s further classify the 4-door cars Silver Red

  10. Here’s what our classifications look like in the end Transportation Kingdom Phylum Two wheel Four wheel Class Car Truck 2-door 4-door Order Convertible Hard-top Silver Red Family

  12. Today’s Lab Activity • You will be classifying a mixture of food items into groups. • IMPORTANT!!! If you have any nut or fruit allergies please let one of the teachers know before you do the lab!!!
