Recent discovery tools(next generation public interfaces) • What’s new? • New look, more visually appealing • Simplified search interface • Faceted analysis of search results • New features & new links • Contents, summaries, book jackets, reviews • Users can add tags, reviews, or ratings • Links to related data for specific titles • Links to alternative information resources • Links to author information • Generally can include locally loaded databases in addition to your library catalog

  7. Recent discovery tools • What’s fundamentally different? • Not an ILS or a fully functional OPAC • New interface & new indexes that overlay your data and your OPAC functions • Does not (and can not) completely replace your ILS OPAC functionality • Can replace the public interface

  28. VuFind: Open Source • Development initiated at Villanova University • Project leader is Andrew Nagy • Development started in 2006 • Four to six main code contributors • First release candidate for version 1 announced October 16.

  29. VuFind: Open Source • Development repository at sourceforge.com (an open source development/distribution service). • Code contributions can be made through this site. • Most current development version can be downloaded from here. • Stable (mostly) versions downloaded VuFind.org site.

  30. VuFind: Open Source • The distributions contain complete source code. • Local customizations can be made to any part of the software. • These will have to be modified and reapplied after each upgrade.

VuFind with Voyager • VuFind basically sits on top of Voyager. • Bib Data (Marc) extracted from Voyager and loaded into VuFind (and indexed). • Solr/Lucene indexing/search engine • VuFind links out to Voyager to get Location and Status information. • It also links to Voyager for all patron related info (after login).

  32. VuFind with Voyager • It also links to Voyager to do any Request type functions. • We will try to make this Request linking as easy as possible for patrons.

  33. VuFind@USG • Each institution will have it’s own instance of VuFind. • UC will also be a separate instance. • Location info from MFHD will be added to Bib data loaded into VuFind. • Location Facet created from this data.

Features Faceted results Search, then refine by NARROW SEARCH feature… Multiple categories – format, author, topic, call number (Others available: era, genre, subject area, language, region) Similar Items “More Like This” suggestions Algorithm to generate list At record level only Persistent URLS Bookmarkable, can be embedded For records & queries Records Sorts - relevance, date, call number, author, title Citation management APA & MLA citations now available Compatible with EndNote, Refworks & Zotero Translations – with more to come soon!

Features Web 2.0 Tagging Whenever someone adds an item as a favorite in VuFind and gives it a tag, the tag is added to the public record Requires participation of MANY LibraryThing connection possible (we are NOT adding these tags) Save to Favorites Save, organize & retrieve lists Texting/emailing for records/results Comments RSS feeds for live updates Reviews fromAmazon (others possible, like Syndetics) Book covers (Amazon, Google Books with links into record)
