Drayage Trucking News • 10/2013 – ASF Intermodal opens Chicago terminal (ASF has 7 other drayage terminals in the southeast) • 11/2013 – Knight Port Services closes Chicago and Houston dray operations (still have 8 other drayage terminals West and Gulf Coast) • 1/2014 – OTR trucking company Forward Air buys Central States Trucking (CST founded in 1980, has 4 terminals in Midwest)

Drayage Trucking News • 1/2014 – Mason Dixon Intermodal officially rebranded to “Universal Intermodal” (Mason Dixon name goes back to 1925) • Demand for drayage trucking still increasing: OTR trucking companies offering dedicated container drayage: Old Dominion, Schneider National Intermodal Services, Knight Port Services, Averitt Express, Werner

Drayage Trucking News • 2013 – Whimsy Trucking is first in Chicago to buy light weight 5 x 40’ two-axle 3 x 20’ tri axle chassis with super single tires. • Chassis weigh less and combined with day cab tractors can haul several thousand lbs. more weight before needing overweight permit. • Radials – more reliable • Low rolling resistance – better fuel economy • Two-axle tare weight just 5,000 lbs

Ocean Carrier News • Maersk recreating “Sealand” name for ocean service within the Americas (SeaLand pioneered the use of containerization in 1960s that we are familiar with today) • APL restructuring again, to better coordinate Scottsdale, AZ office with Denver with Detroit functions. • OOCL moves to new integrated center in Salt Lake City, 300 jobs

Intermodal Terminal News • 2013 – Norfolk Southern continues to buy properties in Englewood (to expand 63rd Street terminal) • 7/2013 – CN opens intermodal terminals in downtown Indianapolis (Indiana Railroad is operator) & downtown Joliet, IL (old EJ&E yard) Both primarily for grain going for export • 9/2013 – Village of Elwood Trustees create “Elwood International Port Authority”

Final Remarks • Domestic and International container volumes expected to increase modestly again for 2014 • Will be continued increase in truckload-to-intermodal conversion in 2014 • Duplicate repair bills paid by multiple draymen for same chassis repair? • Has decrease in total number of chassis count with the better utilization (increased number of turns per chassis) causing the backlog of containers when bad weather strikes?
