4. Sci-Tech Skills Creativity Problem Solving GRIT Collaboration

5. Classroom Theme • Students took a personality quiz to be “sorted” into their “House” to foster collaboration, build teamwork, and appreciate other learning styles • Where would you be sorted? Try your own! • Our Houses align with our Sci-Tech skills and our school expectations • House Points encourages teamwork and goal setting • Students also earn Dojo Dollars for individual accomplishments to purchase coupons or experiences

6. Communication • The class website and student planner will have tons of info about projects, assignments, due dates, and events - please check there first! • Clark e-news and PTA have wonderful text systems in place to keep you in the loop! • Grading takes a LONG time for 50 students, we try to get things back to students quickly, we promise! • Please e-mail BOTH teachers, so we make sure we get the message! • Email the attendance office and teachers with any dismissal changes, absences, and early pick ups • clkattendance@issaquah.wednet.edu

8. Grading • Standards-based (No plus or minus) • 4 = Exceeds Standard • 3* = Meets Standard (exactly where your child SHOULD be) • 2 = Approaches Standard • 1 = Below Standard • Numbers do not correlate to traditional letter grades- a 4 is not an “A” • Due dates= when assignments should be turned in, but we will accept them later if students need more time (let us know if you need more than 24 hours!) • Deadline= the last day an assignment will be accepted (typically for big projects or before report cards) • ALL assignments may be corrected for a better grade! We know that more learning occurs when we make a mistake and correct it! • Vocab and technology are not on the report card, but will be considered for behavior grades (responsibility, perseverance, collaboration)

9. Writing • Writer’s Workshop – a consistent time where strategies are taught and practiced. Driven by student choice and daily practice. (Lucy Calkins Units of Study) • Narrative • Opinion • Informational • Memoir • * Writing projects are meant to be completed in class and are graded using the rubric for each grade level- it is the one thing that you will see when it is finished!

10. Reading • “Making Meaning” • Learn comprehension strategies through reading short texts (in one lesson) • Literature circles – small group meeting to discuss novels • Need to keep up on reading assignment • Each student will be given a comprehension job each week to complete • Weekly comprehension quizzes • Fountas and Pinnell Testing-to check reading levels (Fall and Winter)

11. Math • Eureka Math • 4th and 5th graders receive separate instruction • Use 3D gamelab for assignments so students can work at their own pace and gain feedback as they learn, encourages deeper level thinking skills, time management, and provides enrichment opportunities for students who complete assignments • Modules are the big units, Topics are a set of lessons within each module • Required Assignments for each Topic • Dungeons (Exit Tickets) • Application Problems ( Problem solving) • Zearn (Online program that contains fluency, videos, and provides feedback)

13. Science • 5th grade rotation, taught throughout the year with a special emphasis on Wednesdays • Motion and Design (forces and motion) • Life Science (adaptations that help an organism survive) • Electric Circuits (electricity) • Fossils • Plants • Engineering Kits: Boeing Bolt Catchers Kit

14. Technology • Stations each Wednesday for specific tech skills and daily integration of tech that fosters collaboration and as a tool for learning • Coding Focus • Code.org and Scratch • 6 week stations for Spheros, Drones, Lego Mindstorms, • 3 week stations for MakeyMakey, Micro:bits • Focus is on algorithms and computer science

Social Studies • Brand new curriculum! • Our focus is having students learn about different perspectives, and looking critically at the past • Parent letters will keep you up to date about the conversations we have in class • Exploration, Encounter, Colonization • Revolutionary War • US Government

16. Social Emotional Learning Second Step lessons are taught at each grade level

17. Project Based Learning • Genius Hour • 1 hour of time to research and learn about what they want to learn about- want to learn about why bridges don’t fall? Or all about Bill Gates? Students have guided research and time to reflect on what matters to them and share it in a variety of ways • Makerspace • A project where students have to tinker with tools and get building! A connection with engineering, students design something for a real world problem, and revise and redesign as needed • STEMposium • We take a small group (around 8 students) to showcase our learning and our program at the district STEMposium in February

18. Vocabulary • Curriculum is based on Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes • Putting the pieces together to make new words, decode, expand vocabulary • Fourth and fifth graders have the same words • Quizlet • Students will need to have their own account and have their login information- we are unable to make accounts for each student • Join our class at: https://quizlet.com/join/PUAhj5BQz

19. Science Homework • Packet comes home on Monday • Students can do one page per day, or all at once • Return by Friday, ready for a short quiz • Corrections are always encouraged! • Review weeks: students pick one big idea and write about it in their own words- should be familiar enough to use vocabulary, explain and elaborate with examples, and use diagrams • 5th graders take the Science MSP in the spring, and 87% of our students scored above grade level last year because they had experience discussing and writing about science!

20. Field trips • Science-to-Go in class • Brightwater Treatment Facility- November 15th Discovery Days Engineering/Tech fair University of Washington • 5th Grade Camp (Tentatively planned for April: M-W before spring break) • Living Computers Coding Cumulative field trip Early June

21. Conferences • Student Led Conferences- students will share their e-portfolios and evaluate their progress • December 5th and 6th • There will be an online sign up

22. Volunteers We LOVE having volunteers! • Coding stations • Art support • Reading groups • Classroom clerical work • Field trip chaperones • All volunteer sign ups will be on Sign Up Genius

23. How can I support my child? • Build Homework routines for vocab/science packets • Use the Friday Planner as a checklist for due dates and assignments • Check in on 3D Gamelab (check gamer “player card” to see when assignments are submitted) • Encourage Failure as a part of learning
