  1. New France 1600 - 1700

  2. Fur Trade Jacque Cartier, began trade between the French and Huron Indians traveling down St. Lawrence River. King of France, Henry IV, found out what was going on, and he wanted a colony in North America In order for the French merchants to profit from the furs they had to create a colony.

  3. Samuel de Champlain A cartographer sent to map places where beavers were found. Explored forests in Eastern Canada he named New France.

  4. Civil War in France Fur trade weakened for French This caused the French settlements to grow slowly. English and Dutch colonists were settling on coast of New France. This started arguments that included the Huron Indians and Iroquois.

  5. Royal Colony Count de Frontenac King Louis XIV wanted to rebuild the new French empire. In 1672, the king created a Royal colony that was governed by Count de Frontenac.

  6. 1673 - Marquette and Joliet Expedition Frontenac put together an expedition to explore rivers and lakes that would lead to the Mississippi River. The expedition to Mississippi River valley brought more French settlements and trade to the area.

  7. Sieur de la Salle Louisiana Lead an expedition to the mouth of the Mississippi River. He claimed the Mississippi Valley for France. The region was name Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV. Difficult to live in hot, swampy land. La Salle was murdered and settlement failed.

  8. Propiertary colony New Orleans King of France gave ownership of the land to one person, John Law, a Scottish banker. He built more towns and more people came to settle. In 1718 the town of New Orleans was founded, and in 4 years New Orleans became the capital of Louisiana. Africans were brought in to work on plantations. Still failed to attract enough people to be successful.
