Natural Disasters: Volcanoes

Natural Disasters: Volcanoes. What is a volcano?. An opening in the earth’s crust where magma (molten rock) flows from the mantle to the surface. Volcanoes create new land when molten rock reaches the surface, cools and hardens into solid rock. Volcanoes and Tectonic Plates.

  1. Natural Disasters: Volcanoes

  2. What is a volcano? An opening in the earth’s crust where magma (molten rock) flows from the mantle to the surface

  3. Volcanoes create new land when molten rock reaches the surface, cools and hardens into solid rock

  4. Volcanoes and Tectonic Plates most volcanoes occur near tectonic “active zones” (boundaries between two or more tectonic plates) Divergent zones – where two plates are moving away from each other (Katla volcano in Iceland) Convergent zones – where two plates are crashing into each other (Kyushu volcano in Japan)

  5. Volcanoes in North America There are active volcanoes along the pacific coast of Canada (British Columbia) and USA Mount St. Helens in Washington State, USA

  6. Mt. St. Helens Erupted in 1980

  7. Mt. St. Helens: Before and After

  8. Volcanoes DESTROY land during eruptions (Mt. St. Helens BBC) Volcanic mountains can explode, destroying land, plants, animals and human settlements Volcanic eruptions include: • Earthquakes • Lava flows • Explosions of hot gas, ash and rock • Landslides and mudslides

  9. Volcanoes also create land and life Creating land  when molten lava cools and solidifies, it turns into solid rock (this is new land) Creating life  the minerals from volcanic rock and ash create very good soil for new plants New life at Mount St. Helens Balance of creation/destruction in Hawaii Getting too close?
