  2. E-SURFMAR VOS TAG – UK Report • Real time observations from UK ‘Selected’ observing ships • = approx 74500 observations in 2005 [ + Approx. 15000 observations from Rigs] Timeliness of observations from UK observing ships

TurboWin Logbooks E-SURFMAR VOS TAG – UK Report • By the end of 2005 a total of 147 ships had been supplied with electronic TurboWin logbooks – amounting to 38% of the active UK Selected fleet (at the end of 2004 this figure stood at 98 ships amounting to 25%) • 75 ships have been provided with dedicated laptops for TurboWin • 233 Paper Logbooks received in 2005 • Aim to transfer to TurboWin by end of 2007

Automatic Weather Systems - Installations E-SURFMAR VOS TAG – UK Report 1 – AUTOMET (Installed on ferry ‘Pride of Bilbao’ in July 04) 1 – MINOS GP (installed on ferry ‘Stena Leader’ in ….. 1 – BATOS (installation on container ship ‘Toronto Express’ almost complete) 1 – AVOS (installation due to commence April 2006) BATOS Automatic Weather Systems - Planned 8 - Minos GP (for coastal, Icelandic and continental ships) 2 - Minos GPW (possibly for coastal tankers/ferries) 2 – Batos (for North Atlantic container ships) (other systems including MILOS and Weatherpak to be considered next FY as part of AWS trials) MINOS AVOS AUTOMET

E-SURFMAR VOS TAG – UK Report Future Plans • To roll out TurboWin to 90% of VOS fleet by April 2007 • To withdraw inactive VOS (reduce fleet size to 300-350 ships) • Increase automation (subject to budgets) • Increased VOS deployment of Argo Floats • All manual offshore rig observations to be sent direct by email by October 2006 • Re-introduce Long Service Award Scheme • Replace Wooden screens with Plastic screens Expectations of E-SURFMAR • Introduction of E-SURFMAR (DWD) database for metadata by end of 2006? • Development of a common database for reporting European PMO inspections • Introduction of Wiki site for reporting additional observations • Introduction of a common E-SURFMAR publication for VOS • Harmonisation of practices wherever possible (e.g. common inspection forms) • Further development of TurboWin to include additional training aspects, metadata collection, BUFR etc • Commitment to increase European VOSClim participation • Increased co-operation between E-PMOs
