Jesus’ Birth, Childhood, and Career of Teaching the Old Testament Bible

Last time s homework

Last Time’s Homework

Read what the Missionary Paul said when he visited a Jewish synagogue in Acts 13:13-41. As you read it, compare his train of thought with the diagram of the Old Testament History in lesson three. Notice how the Holy Spirit led Paul to explain that the Old Testament promises Jesus to His ancestors.

A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:

Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David.

David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,

and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,

and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Lesson Four: Jesus’ Life, Death, and Return to Life

Which Bible books tell about Jesus’ life?

Why so little on the first 30 years? Why so much on the last week of His life?

Bible 101

The first 30 years are just as important for your rescue as the last week of His life!

The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing!

Lesson Four: Jesus’ Life, Death, and Return to Life

What’s the basic story of Jesus’ life?

1) Jesus’ Birth Was Just As God Predicted.

Matthew 1

Why would it be important for Matthew to begin with a family tree listing for his audience?

In verse 22 notice the first of 35 Old Testament quotes in Matthew.

What’s the basic story of Jesus’ life?

1) Jesus’ Birth Was Just As God Predicted.

Luke 2:1-20

The most detailed account we have of Jesus’ birth.

Compare Luke 2:4 with Micah 5:2. Notice how every prediction from God came true!

What’s the basic story of Jesus’ life?

2) Jesus’ Childhood…

Luke 2:41-52

The only account we have from Jesus’ early years. Why might God give us only one account and not a number of them?

Look at verse 48 & 49. Notice Mary’s comment and Jesus’ reply. How can you tell Jesus understood why He was here?

Verse 52 summarizes Jesus’ life from age 12 to 30…

3) Jesus Begins His Teaching Career

Matthew 3:1-4:11

John the Baptizer was the person Isaiah 40:3 was predicting.

Jesus’ baptism kicked off His years of explaining the Old Testament. He started by openly classifying Himself with sinners. 1) They need baptism, and 2) They fight temptations to sin.

At Jesus’ baptismGod the Father showed that Jesus pleased Him. Jesus never gave in to any temptation. He lived an ideal, holy, unselfish life. He had traded places with us.

Bible 101

During His three years teaching Jesus trained twelve

men to keep publicizing the good news about what Jesus had done. They could speak from first-hand experience because they: 1) been with Jesus, 2) witnessed His return to life and 3) had his Spirit fill them. He would use them to get Jesus’ message out.

4) Jesus’ Teaching Career

Luke 7:18-23

Jesus helped people in supernatural ways during this time. These miracles 1) marked Him as the one God had promised (Is. 29:18-19), 2) showed His capability to ultimately destroy all evil and 3) helped people physically.

4) Jesus’ Teaching Career

Jewish religious leaders believed in earning God’s love and mercy. They wanted a liberator from Roman occupation more than a liberator from sins. Jesus’ popularity scared them. Most people wanted the kind of liberator their leaders did. There were some who saw their own sin, their need for God’s help and the promises about the suffering Savior. They saw Jesus for who He was and depended on Him. He didn’t let them down.
