Welcome • Ondrej Hajda (DoRep, dorep@) • Pam Andrew (Employability Coordinator, pea1@) • Robert Gelb (International Opportunities Manager, robert.gelb@) • Objectives: • Understand the role of Employability Reps and show how to be an effective Employability Rep. • Explain how to work with Careers Centre Advisors and Careers Link in your School. • Establish an action plan for organizing careers events in your School.

  4. What does an Employability Rep do? Ondrej

  5. Overview • You are a Class Rep with a democratic mandate first and foremost. Consult your mates and represent! • Role description: • Work closely with the Careers Centre, your School and other reps on organizing School-specific employability events (e.g. alumni speaking about careers options for students within your School). • Attend the Employability Reps Forum and provide feedback on careers and skills development services in your School and across the University. • Employability Reps Forum • 3 times a year: Nov 5th, Feb 18th, Apr 8th; 4-5pm • Employability Reps + Careers Centre staff + DoRep

Who is who? • Careers Advisers (Careers Centre) • School specific – deliver talks, meet with Careers Links • Sectors – employer visits, recruitment contacts, resources • Careers Link (your School) • Work in partnership with Careers Adviser & School President to enhance employability • Act as channel of communication • Promote employability events • Identify staff, alumni and students to act as contacts for events etc. • Meetings with Careers Advisers + Careers Link + School President + Employability Reps • Make sure to introduce yourself to your Careers Adviser and your Careers Link!

Inspiration & ideas for events • At university – internship events • Biology – speed networking • Economics – The Vic • Geography – “Careers & Coffee” • After university – alumni, postgraduate study, School staff • Alumni - Chemistry – panel of six alumni • Post-graduate – Biology event – 2 Masters & 1 PhD • Staff – Earth Science – evening academics showcase research • Before you go – Classics – final years show case their experiences

  9. Your role within your School • Organise at least one event a semester • Careers Adviser • Can offer advice on how to organise • Speak at event • Help book a venue (if finishes before 6) • Funding – School and Students’ Association (EDF) • Publicise - FB and Saint Connect - Lydia can help

Connecting with Alumni • Finding alumni • Personal touch: Careers Advisers and School staff might know interesting alumni in your area • Alumni Relations – email contact via the Careers Centre • LinkedIn – huge database • Saint Connect – St Andrews-specific • Resources & Funding • Careers Centre – ask your Careers Adviser • Virtual events – easy & cheap to connect (virtualevents@) • Schools – ask your Careers Link • Education Discretionary Fund (Students’ Association) – apply through your School President
