  3. INTRODUCTION The Blitz took place between 7 september 1940 and 11 may 1941, and the second war : 1939-1945 Nearlytwo million children wereevacuatedfromtheir homes. Children had to endure rationing, gasmasklessons, living withstrangers… Most « remember » the Blitz – Whetherthroughfamily stories, TV, Books, art, memorial and museums. And wewilltry to let you imagine the difficult situation of thesepoor children and families in Englandthanks to ourslideshow.

  4. HOPE AND GLORY BY JOHN BOORMAN The Plot. A 1987 moviedirected by John Boorman. It’s about a nineyearold boy called Bill as hegrew up in London during the blitz of WWII withhisfamily, Dawn, Suzie and his parents Clive and Grace. For the boy, it’s more than justadventure, a total upheaval of order, restrictions and discipline. And thepurejoywhen Hitler blows up theirschool.

This situation is a hugedrama for the parents and these children. Weunderstand the brokenheart of everybody and the sadnessduring the evacuations of 1939 and 1940.

The city of London wasbombedsomany children were in danger, sothey must beevacuated. 2)Do you know wheretheywere sent ? I think they were sent to host families until the end of the war. Some of them were back home after a few weeks.

  8. THE EVACUATION OF CHILDREN An evacuee In thispicturewecansee an evacuee of World War II. He has got a suitcase, a gaz mask and a bag. He wears a blazer with white socks. Alsohe has got a label on his blazer, it’s to recognizehim!

  9. WINSTON CHURCHILL Hisroleduring the Blitz.   To many people in Britain, Churchill stands against Nazism and all it stood for, summarised why the war that was being fought. His speeches have become part of a legend – be it ‘fighting on the beaches’ or his salute to the men from Fighter Command who took on the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. Churchill also remained in London during the Blitz and regularly visited areas bombed out by the Luftwaffe. To the people of London, he was one of them and a man who could have removed himself from the dangers of German bombers, but refused to - staying in bombed out London along with those who suffered.

THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM IN LONDON « The children’swar » Over the course of the Second World War, 1.300,00 children suffered the loss of a parent on active service, one million were evacuated from their homes, with a further 16,000 sent overseas and 7,736 children died as a direct result of enemy action.   13. GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM. It’s a story about a young boy, Willie Beech. He wasevacuatedduring the Blitz. He waswelcomed by an old man, called Tom Oakley. Tom islonelysincehiswife and son died. Tom first didn’twantto care about Willie but hehad no choice. The novelwaswritten in 1981 by Michelle Magorian. The Movie wasadapted on the TV in 1998 by Jack Gold.

  14. GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM. Willie wasbrought to Tom’s house. On the first view Tom didn’taccept Willie but the organiser, the woman in a green coat, forcedhim to have him. Willie wasscared of that « rude » man. He entered the house without a word. Tom gave himsomething to eat. Time went by and Tom began to appreciate Willie, he gave himsomeclothes and hesawthat Willie had been mistreated.

  15. CONCLUSION During the Blitz many children whereevacuated but a lot of British children stayedat home. So many children saw the city beingbombedwithdangerous air-raids. The otherswere sent to foster parents. During the traveltheyfeltunhappy and homesick.Somechildrendied ! London housesweredestroyed or damaged and more than 40, 000 civilianswerekilled, half of them in London. The Blitz causedorphans and parents without children. The Blitz will mark forever the spirit of the survivors.
