HISTORICAL EVENTS


November 5, 1940 President Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes first man to hold office for three terms.


December 7, 1941

The attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, commences at 7:55 a.m. when Japanese fighter planes launch a surprise attack on United States.


June 6, 1944 – The Normandy Invasion ( D-Day )


August 6, 1945 - President  Harry S. Truman gives the go-ahead for the use of the atomic bomb with the bombing of Hiroshima.  Three days later, the second bomb is dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. 

On August 15, Emperor Hirohito of Japan surrenders


INVENTIONS and TECHNOLOGY


The Slinky was invented in 1945!


In 1947, Erwin Land invented the single-step photographic process that enabled pictures to develop in sixty seconds


The Real Solid Liquid made the toy catalog in 1949 !


Engineer Dr. Percy LeBaron Spencer was working at Raytheon Corporation and discovered the microwaves he was working with melted his candy bar! This was the first introduction to the concept of the microwaves!


Medical Advances


Penicillin is available to the public in 1940


In 1947,

Dr. Willem J. Kollif invented the kidney dialysis


In 1948, Kevin Tuohy began manufacturing contact lenses made entirely of plastic.


In1949,

Cortisone produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands

was synthesized and proved to have therapeutic value in rheumatoid arthritis and a variety of inflammatory diseases.
