STRESSED???. “STRESS” What is it???. STRESS: Physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension. Similar to worrying. STRESS is your body’s physical and emotional reaction to circumstances that frighten, irritate, confuse, endanger, or excite you . STRESS can be positive or negative.

  2. “STRESS” What is it??? • STRESS: Physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension. Similar to worrying. • STRESS is your body’s physical and emotional reaction to circumstances that frighten, irritate, confuse, endanger, or excite you. • STRESS can be positive or negative.

  3. STRESS… • Negative stress gets in the way and puts demands on your mind and body. • Stress isn’t all bad; it’s really very necessary in life. An average amount of stress can give you that extra burst of energy needed to make you more alert to pass an exam. • Positive stress pushes you to complete a task or do something.

  4. STRESS… • What stresses you out? Knowing exactly what gets you stressed is a big first step in dealing or coping with it. • Family: divorce, family members arguing, health of family member, parent losing their job. • School: Bullying, changes in friends, school demands such as tests, big projects, homework, public speaking. • Overscheduled, lack of sleep, poor diet, and lack of exercise.

  5. OVERSTRESSED??? • Things in life might be making you OVERstressed! • Being overstressed over a long period of time can make you physically sick. It’s like running a car engine until it runs out of gas. Sooner or later something will break or melt down. • ***Great news for those that are overstressed!!! • It is highly treatable and manageable!!! • Let’s take a minute to complete a short stress survey.

REDUCING STRESS IN YOUR LIFE! • PREPAREDNESS: One way to reduce stress and anxiety in all area of life is to be prepared! • A runner trains for months on a regular schedule to prepare for a marathon. • A good student studies daily for upcoming tests. • Procrastination: waiting until the last minute to do task is probably one of the main reasons for stress!

Activities to Relieve Stress • STRESS SAFETY VALVES: • Take a walk • Listen to music • Care for a pet • Get into your favorite hobby or start a new one • Play a musical instrument • Jog, dance, play basketball, or join in some physical activity you enjoy. • Play for fun instead of only to win. • Smile at someone, or do something nice for someone. • Tackle one task at a time. Lack of time management is huge cause of stress. • Talk to someone who listens. • Spend some time alone.

  8. More strategies and Relaxation Ideas • Counting 10 breaths back. • Allow yourself to feel calm and relaxed. • Count each breath slowly from 10 to one. • Allow yourself to feel more relaxed with each count. • With each breath out, allow the tension to leave your body.

  9. More strategies and Relaxation Ideas • Whole body tension: tense all the muscles in your whole body. Hold that tension as long as you can without feeling pain. • Slowly release the tension and feel it leave your body little by little. • Repeat three times. • Describe how this feels.

Activities to Relieve Stress • Writing in a journal or writing a letter. • You can write in a journal or diary to put your thoughts, feelings, and concerns in written form. • You can brainstorm solutions to the current situation. • If your angry with someone or hurt or frustrated, write that person a letter. You don’t have to send it. If you do send it, it should offer positive solutions.
