Where have I been since school?? • Worked for four companies • Dupont Chemical Co • Dupont Merck • Dupont Pharmaceuticals • Bristol-Myers Squibb • Moved five times • Dupont Experimental Station • Dupont Chambers Works • X Station again • Chambers Works again • BMS Princeton site • BMS New Brunswick site • But have always been primarily a bench chemist! • Know what you are!

What do I do at Bristol Myers Squibb?? • figure out how to scale up processes for new pharmaceutical agents. - safety - cost - speed - future • organize and prepare multikilogram batches for a variety of studies, including clinical. • instruct and oversee outside vendor preparations. • anticipate future needs. • preparation for regulatory documents, which leads to……………………..

Now for something completely different Associate Editorship of Org Process Res & Dev background • take control of one’s own career • started publishing & presenting in 1998 • ACS Nat mtgs, ACS journals • became OPRD reviewer in 2006 • joined OPRD Editorial Advisory Board in 2007 • became OPRDAssoc. Editor in 2008

  8. What is the role of an Assoc. Editor?? • assign manuscripts for review • oversee review process • review all manuscripts for content, style, etc • make decision to accept, reject or revise • make final acceptance • recruit talent for OPRD • market OPRD • provide guidance for future direction of journal • in general, whatever will improve the service of OPRD to our readers

Secrets to being published! • first, do something worth publishing • what is the theme of your publication • feel free to ask an Assoc Editor • before you start writing, what journal are you targeting. • get a fast first draft down on paper • then rewrite, rewrite, rewrite, rewrite • but write in good English • write dynamically and avoid the passive voice • check the ACS style guide • ask a colleague to critique your manuscript • be accurate • avoid silly mistakes • cite OPRD frequently
