What do we mean by “good”?What are we aiming to do? • Theoretical goals • Advance our understanding of people, technology and society and the relationships between them • Practical goals • Test our infrastructure and advance the technology • Provide useful technology or compelling experiences for people • Help shape the future through the creation of successful new technologies

  3. To achieve any of these practical goals, the nature of Ubicomp technology means we must deploy in the everyday world.

  4. Why? • Ubicomp • Everywhere • Connected • Context-Aware • Invisible

  5. 3 Meanings of Invisibility Embeddness digital capabilities that are embedded within everyday objects or the everyday environment. Literal invisibility digital services, capabilities or functions that are literally invisible to the user Functional invisibility technologies or tools that “disappear” in use (cf Heidegger, Norman et al)

  6. Functional Invisibility • Invisibility through use: to see if new technologies can achieve this, they must be used in the long term

  7. Embeddedness • Invisibility through embedding: to see if new applications will succeed, they must be used in everyday contexts, with situated, everyday artifacts

  8. Literal Invisibility • Literal invisibility: discovery and awareness are vital aspects of use, which can only be assessed in real situations

  9. This isn’t easy… • So all the more reason to get the application right before you start • Here other kinds of studies can help • In developing the concept: Who should we target? What might they value? How consequential will the app be? • In designing the application: What are some good design practices or guidelines? What makes something compelling?

  10. Conclusions • Good app-led research is research in the wild • Application-led means a lot of work getting the app right prior to deployment • Successful apps will show themselves through uptake, emerging patterns of use, showing value, proving to be compelling
