  1. Teacher Notes Discussion points have been added to the slides. If at any time you see it’s a good time to stop and discuss . There are notes for the discussion in the notes section of each slide. Printing the slides will not show the text on the slide Notes can be taken on the process grid or in C-note format

  2. Catastrophic Events in the Aquatic Biome

  3. Why would natural disasters increase the rate of erosion? Catastrophic Events • Catastrophic Event • An event that is naturally occurring or caused by human action that: • Causes severe damage to the land • Endangers or causes loss of life (plant and animal) • Speeds up the effects of erosion and deposition • Also known as natural disasters

  4. Flooding What would cause flooding? How could we reduce the effects of flooding? • Location and Impact • Happens only in fresh water • Increases erosion • Increases the fertility of the land • Occurs when a body of water overflows its normal boundaries • Causes of flooding • heavy rains • hurricanes • storm surges • thunderstorms • melting snow or ice Maintain native vegetation to decrease the effects of erosion

  5. Tsunami How would a tsunami affect sea life? How would a tsunami affect erosion? • Affects the habitat and resources of plants and animals • Freshwater and Estuaries • Changes the salinity by increasing the amount of salt in the body of water • Marine~ affects sea life Impact on the land Increased Erosion Change of coastline • A large wave produced from earthquakes volcanoes and landslides on the ocean floor • Forms in the marine biome but affects all aquatic biomes

  6. Brain Booster Review • Answer the following questions with your neighbor • What is a catastrophic event? • Why do they increase the amount of erosion?

  7. Why would the impact from hurricanes and tsunamis be similar? Hurricane • Preventative Measures • Jetties • Barrier Islands • Sea Walls Swirling low pressure storm system that develops over warm ocean waters • Location and impact: • Forms in the marine biome but affects all aquatic biomes • Causes storm surges and flooding • Changes salinity and composition of the water • Affects the habitat and resources of plants and animals • Increases erosion

  8. How can dispersant affect the biome? Oil Spills • Preventative Measures • Booms- "temporary floating barrier used to contain an oil spill • Dispersant - Chemical that breaks oil up into small droplets that microorganisms can clean. • Oil and gases leaking into a body of water • Usually happens in marine biome caused by leaking wells or damaged oil tankers • Impact • All aquatic biomes • Pollution of beaches and water • Damage to animals and their habitats

  9. Mini Quiz

  10. Catastrophic events cause an increase in: • Erosion • Storms • Weather • All of the above

  11. Preventative measures for hurricanes include: • Sea Wall • Jetty • There are no preventative measures • Both A & B
