  1. Social Studies We will be taking notes today. Label your Table of Contents – Roman Government Open to next clean page and be ready to begin. Have out Lesson 2 and be ready to correct.

  2. Roman Government Representatives – a person who is elected by citizens to speak or act for them. Republic – a form of government in which citizens elect representatives to speak or act for them. Plebeians – men who farmed, traded and made things for a living. These were the workers. There were many of these people. Patricians – members of Rome’s noble families. They owned large farms and had plebeians work the lands for them. There were very few of these people.

  3. 3 Branches of the Roman Government • Senate – the oldest and most powerful branch of the republic. Mainly controlled by the patricians. They determined how Rome would act toward other governments. They also had control over all the money collected and how it was spent by the Roman Republic. 300 ½ ½ 150/150 • Consul – one of two elected officials of the Roman Republic who commanded the army and were supreme judges. There was one elected Patrician and one elected Plebeian. 2 1/1 10 0/10 • Tribunes – An elected leader who represented the interests of the Plebeians.

Roman Government • Consuls (2) • Patrician • Plebeian • Duties: army commander/powerful judges • Senators (300) • Patricians • Plebeians • Controlled by the Patricians • Determined how Rome would act with other gov’ts. • Controlled the money. • Tribune (10) • Only Plebeians • Worked to gain rights for the Plebeians. • Citizen Assemblies • All citizens Twelve Tables: The Patricians agreed to write a collection of laws on twelve wooden tablets or tables.
