  2. Objectives By the end of the session students should be able to understand: • the importance of interview preparation • that there are different types of interviews • that interviewers have a checklist of requirements And gain a practical understanding of some interview type questions

The position of ‘Logistics Project Manager’ The successful candidate should have: • A degree in a relevant subject: engineering; project management. • Extensive project management or project engineering experience. • Big site experience within a project management or project engineering role. • Experience of monitoring multiple cranes and hoists. • Experience of working on high rise property projects (40 storey +). • Good client and stakeholder relationship building skills • The ability to communicate with contractors (management staff & operatives) effectively • Excellent commercial knowledge • Good knowledge of planning and other aspects of project controls • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills • Fluent English language is essential, Russian or Turkish is desirable

  7. Do Your Homework • Undertaken some research: • about the company/organisation • Have they been in the news recently? What about any recent developments? Who are their competitors • Any new projects? • Products or services? • Etc. • about the industry or sector • Read the articles written by people who are in the field • Inform yourself about future trends • Consider the role you are applying for

  8. Further preparation • Consider questions you might be asked and practise your responses. • (Google search: ‘interview question’) • Consider the questions YOU can ask • Print off a spare copy of your CV/Application Form

First Impressions Count • Dressing smartly shows that you are taking the interview seriously • Greet the interviewer confidently and shake his/her hand, maintaining eye contact during the interview • Be pleasant to all staff. If shown around the workplace, demonstrate your interest to the person showing you around. REMEMBER you are being assessed all the time.

Sell Yourself • Don’t understate your abilities and strengths • Don’t assume that your application has been read thoroughly • Speak confidently and clearly about your experiences. • DO highlight what you have stated in your application. • Think like an employer • Remember, the best candidate is not always the smartest one; nor the most technically accomplished one. Sell yourself in a way that attracts the attention of the employer

  12. Different Types of Interview Telephone Interviews • These are often used as an initial screening method • Ensure you have a quiet environment • Have your details in front of you • Remember to speak clearly and not too quickly • Smile and sound positive.

Competency Based • Structured to reflect the competencies sought by an employer for a particular role. • Your competencies are assessed by the interviewer and checked against their selected criteria. You can prepare for these. • At a panel interview, address the person asking the questions, but maintain eye contact with the whole panel.

  14. STAR technique - to evidence skills • Situation – Where were you? Set the scene • Task What did you set out to achieve? Your role? • Action What did you do? Any problems? • Result What happened? Be positive

  15. Case Study Interviews • Often a business problem to discuss and analyse • You will be assessed on your analytical thinking skills and logical approach to problem solving • You cannot prepare for this – there is not necessarily a right answer!

  16. In summary • Preparation is crucial – on the company, the job • Practise your responses to answers including competency based questions. Use the STAR technique where appropriate. • Look and sound enthusiastic. • VIDEO
