  2. What is academic dishonesty? • Mildred Elley’s explains academic dishonesty, and pl “Most commonly, academic dishonesty refers to plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when an individual uses the ideas, information, words or images of another individual without appropriately crediting the author. Whether the act is accidental or intentional, it is still defined as plagiarism.

  5. BE ORIGINAL! • In this class, to be successful, you need to think and analyze the information you are finding. When you write about it, what you write should be your own original thoughts. • I want to hear what you have to say and what you are thinking. • When completing assignments for this class, use your own words and thoughts.

  6. ALWAYS CITE! • If you need to refer to other’s ideas, or if you would like to discuss information from a source, in combination with your own thoughts, please do so by either quoting from the source and CITING or paraphrasing and CITING.

Examples • For our purposes, examples of citation include the following for articles: • According to Roman (2013), “Research is the best thing that ever happened to the world.” • According to Roman, “Research is the best thing that ever happened to the world” (2013, p. 73). • “Research is the best thing that ever happened to the world,” (Roman, 2012, p. 73).

Examples • For other formats, such as websites, cite link this: • According to the article “What To Do for Headaches“, the author writes “Headaches can be eased by sleep.” • Headaches can be improved by sleeping (“What To Do for Headaches”). • Headaches can be improved by sleeping (“What To Do for Headaches”, 2010).

The Research State of Mind • Use your questions as a guide • Focus on your questions but remain flexible in your pursuit of knowledge • Avoid having too many preconceived notions of what you will find • You are going to be gathering information so begin to think of yourself as an investigator gathering different pieces of a puzzle • Be ready to ANALYZE

Brainstorming • Thinking about your topic before you get going makes it easier for you to develop a direction • Some good brainstorming techniques include: • Conducting background research in encyclopedias • Talking to individuals familiar with your topic • Thinking carefully about what interests you about your topic • Writing down the many different facets about your topic • Writing down known issues within your topic • Writing down what you already know about your topic
