  1. Academic Integrity Dottie Fox dfox@flvs.net

  2. Consider the infraction 1. Look at the TII report, read over the assignment, and/or highlight portions of the assignment that are questionable, right click “search…” 2. Assess the situation. Don’t just go by the TII %. 3. Decide the steps to take 4. Save TII report as follows: Ex: JBlake603Turnitin….. To your documents

  3. Develop a system, and stick to it. Codes G-Good R-Bad • G = the student needs to be spoken to before taking further action. Ex. Some elements of the assignment are word for word • GG = the student has been spoken to about this assignment and may resubmit without penalty • R = the assignment has been submitted to the AI team • RG = the assignment was submitted and student/parent has been spoken to. Student can now edit/resubmit. • gR = Assignment has not been submitting to AI team, but you know you need to.

  4. When the AI Team Responds Via Email: Go back to the assignment and place the percentage that can now be obtained upon resubmission. After speaking with the student/parent: -Log it in VSA! -Uncheck the “Allow no more submissions” box

  5. Hi “Autumn,” How are you doing today? Is there anything exciting happening at school? How is dance? I wanted to talk to you about assignment 6.03. Can you tell me how you went about completing that? Take me through the steps you took. Okay, thanks. Every assignment is put through a program that checks for originality (work in your own words). Yours was coming up in the “red” zone. Did you use any outside sources to help you complete this assignment? -Discuss making sure students rephrase their answers. This way we know they UNDERSTOOD the reading. -Discuss alternatives to “infractions,” such as calling teacher, attending MNM, and re-reading work. Remember Autumn, it’s OKAY if your work is not perfect the first time around. You can ALWAYS resubmit work based on my comments, for a higher score. What do I say to the student?

  6. What do I say to the parent? Hi Autumn’s Mom, How are you doing today? I wanted to give you an update on how Autumn is doing in the course (Insert some sort of positive info here). I also wanted to discuss with you assignment 6.03. It was coming up high on our Academic Integrity check. Every assignment is scanned against everything on the internet, including websites, the reading in the lesson, other students’ work, and even work from students in traditional school. Autumn’s assignment was not completely in her own words. Let me pull up the assignment and report, so I can tell you exactly what it says. (Discuss the type of infraction) Currently, I am waiting on the Academic Integrity report from the team, to see what steps we can take next….(resubmitting work, zeros, etc.) OR The Academic Integrity team stated that she can redo the assignment in her own words for 50% credit. Remind parents that these infractions are documented, across all classes, so further infractions may render more harsh results. Bring the conversation back to moving forward, I spoke to Autumn about alternatives when she is stuck on the assignment or how to write her work in her own words….

  7. TheResearch Paper Every time you speak to students, talk about the paper. Talk about where to find resources: on the home page, the Purdue OWL website, and an extra powerpoint for step by step instructions. Mention the paper in assignment 5.05. Mention citing sources in all portions of the course in feedback. Use the rubric in 6.03 and highlight where they scored and write in comments. Email it to their personal address. Preventative Measures -If a student’s attachment does not come through, but you can see the red TII report, send it back to them with: “Oops…your work was not here…here is how to resubmit….and don’t forget to make sure that it is in your own words. Let me know if you need help.” -Make forcing slides addressing AI throughout the year. -Notice assignments that are borderline AI infractions and mention that in the feedback of the assignment “Thanks for submitting this assignment! Wasn't this story gross? It really brings to light the benefits and drawbacks of journalists. Can you do me a favor, and make sure to always answer questions in your own words? You can write what you learned by restating what was in the reading. This way, I am able to see exactly what you learned! :) Super!”
