For each orientation/MO, the electric-dipole selection rule dictates the symmetry of the photodetached electron wave (yf). yf is expanded in the s, p, d, f, etc. basis, but the consideration is limited to the s and p components only. The spatial properties of the symmetry-allowed s and p partial waves determine the anisotropy of the photoelectron bands in the images. The model case of CS2- is used as a reference for interpreting the results for complex cluster anion systems
