  3. State of Maryland • Establish a State level CIO and Office of Technology • Begin to develop of State Level Technology Plan • Focus on state services including those offered by MVA, Department of Transportation, and the Office of Budget and Taxation • Little focus on higher education.

MHEC Technology Objectives • Encourage the instructional use of technology, as appropriate, at all institutions to improve Learning and Curricula • Make high quality postsecondary education available to all citizens by distance education using electronic media • Make electronic library services and materials available to the faculty and students of all Maryland postsecondary institutions in a cost effective manner

  6. USM Technology Plan • Cites need for many more technology workers in Maryland • Emphasizes Technology competence for all USM graduates • Need to develop on-line learning opportunities for Maryland citizens

  7. USM RegentsMinimum Standards for Information Technology 1. Each student will have access to an appropriate computer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 2. Each student will have access to appropriate software and electronic material to complete course assignments • Students , faculty and staff will have access to the campus network with adequate bandwidth connected to the Internet 24 hours per day, 7 days per week • Faculty and staff will have access to computer technology in their offices or work places to do their work. Each campus will have a technology plan.

USM Minimum Standards continued… • Each campus will provide email for students, faculty and staff • Each campus will have an explicit IT support plan • There will be a plan for the replacement and maintenance of computer hardware • Each campus will seek out appropriate collaborative opportunities with other USM campus to insure that cutting edge technology and e-business technology is utilized • Each campus will insure that all students, irrespective of financial means, will have access to the IT equipment and services on their campuses

  11. SMART Classrooms • Management and growth • 1997 – 4 SMART rooms • 1998 – 26 SMART rooms • 2001 – 42 SMART rooms • 2002 – 73 SMART rooms • 2003 – 83 SMART rooms • $196,000 per year by 2005

  12. Helpdesk and User support • Support 1500 campus computers • Manage 7 university Computer labs • Software support • Microsoft • Peoplesoft – 24x 7 • WebCT – 24x7 • Specialty software: accounting, SPSS, SAS, Minitab, Maple, Photoshop, Quark, GIS …..

  13. Broadband for off campus students • 25% of the faculty now use WebCt • 80-90% of faculty have web sites • 65% of students live off campus • SU does not provide dialup access for off campus students • Service provided to faculty/staff averages 28.8K

Networking • Campus network in 1996 – 1,000 ports • Campus network 2002 – 7,000 ports • By 2007 – 10,000+ ports • SU now provides wireless network access in the Blackwell Library, Conflict Resolution House, an the Perdue School of Business. • Wireless access in classrooms, common areas, and green areas

  15. Virtual Student Services • Peopelsoft – web based self service • Student Administration • Financials • Human Resources • Contributor relations • Campus Portal and application integration • Cost $3.2 Million over 10 years and $250K per year

  16. Network Security • I want 100% up time • I want remote access to my office computer • I want to be virus free • I want to be able to download any type of material from the Internet • I want really fast throughput • But I don’t want restrictions on what I do, when I do it, or where I do it.

Other interesting things to watch • Will students move to laptop computers? • What will the next generation of SMART rooms look like? • What is the next level of integrating technology into instruction and learning? • Will PDAs play a role in instruction? • Will streaming video supplement or take the place of some or all instruction? • Will academic departments collaborate utilizing technology? Internally? Externally?
