WHY DO ‘CO-PRODUCTION’? • Public services cannot be ‘delivered’ because we are each directly involved in the processes of our own health, education, etc. • We are co-producers of the outcomes of public services. • Talking about health and education as if they can be delivered like pizzas undermines and undervalues citizen’s own responsibilities to the detriment of the whole enterprise Jake Chapman, System Failure

What is co-production? • Co-production is a way of achieving better outcomes by sharing power and responsibility. • Co-production involves seeing people as assets and in charge of their own situation; most of us believe this but we do not always demonstrate it. • Co-production relies on a set of core principles and requires all participants to change the way they work.

  12. Some principles of co-production • Valuing the place we live and/or work; its nature and environment • Respecting and appreciating people; present and absent, past and future generations • Building on everyone’s strengths and interests • Developing peer-support networks • Equality, mutuality and reciprocity • Facilitation not intervention
