  13. Success Criteria Do you have a clear understanding of the Daily Participation Grade?

  14. Don’t miss class! What happens if I am absent? Attendance

  15. Students must be present to earn participation points... It is the responsibility of the student to contact their teacher to communicate an Excused Absence… failure to communicate and/or make up missed work due to an Excused Absence will result in a loss of ALL participation points for the absence. Students will automatically lose 5 Points if the absence is Unexcused Excused & Unexcused Absences

  16. Students CANNOT make up Unexcused Absences Excused absences must be made up within 2 weeks of the absence PE Department Policy on Make Up Assignments: First Absence Students shall complete 60 minutes of activity on their own outside of school Students must accurately complete and submit a PE Activity Log within two weeks of the absence Every Subsequent Absence Students must report to the main gym during seminar on A Days Students must arrive by 7:30am – late students will NOT be accepted Students must complete a 30 minute jog Participation points will be earned based on student performance as it relates to the Physical Education Department’s daily participation rubric Make Up Work for Excused Absences

  17. In addition to being present, all students must dress appropriately for P.E. classes. Proper shoes and clothing must be worn The NHS Dress Code is in effect during PE classes No short shorts No cutoff shirts Alternative assignments may be given to students who choose not to – or are otherwise unable to participate. Failing to dress appropriately for class will result in a loss of participation points. Dress Appropriately

  18. What if I am sick? Do I have to dress for class? Yes, students are always required to dress for class – unless they have a doctor’s note that excuses them from all activity. If you are so sick that you cannot participate, you shouldn’t be in school! However, if your parents demand that you attend school while you are ill, you must dress and then speak to your teacher. Your teacher will determine what activities you shall participate in To be excused for more than one class period, students must have a doctor’s note. If not, you will lose points for each day that you do not participate in physical activity… Discuss Extended Illness/Injury What if I am Sick?

  19. What if I am injured, and I cannot participate? To be excused from participation, we require a doctor’s note. Therefore, you must still dress for class. However, if you are legitimately injured, and you have yet to see a doctor – get dressed for class, and your teacher may excuse you from certain activities. To be excused for more than one class period, students must have a doctor’s note. If not, you will lose points for each day that you do not participate in physical activity… Discuss Extended Illness/Injury What if I am Injured?

  20. In the event of lost points due to an uncorroborated injury/illness – a student may be required to make up lost points This must be done during A Day Seminars as described on a previous slide. Failing to make up lost points within 2 weeks will result in a zero for that particular assignment Illness / Injury

  21. Success Criteria Tell the person next to you what to do in the event of an Absence or Illness

  22. “We’ve got the conference meet today! I need to rest up, so I am going to sit out today, okay?!” If a student-athlete chooses to sit out on a game day – (s)he will receive a ZERO for the day In the unfortunate event that this happens – you can expect your teacher to have a conversation with your coach All student-athletes are expected to dress and participate on game days. We will do our best to exclude you from participating in activities that will keep you from performing at your best in the game Editorial Comment: If you can’t jog for 10 minutes during the warm up, you probably shouldn’t be playing Preferential Treatment

  23. Students can (and will) lose Points for demonstrating unacceptable behaviors such as: Lack of Participation Unsportsmanlike Behavior Insubordination Inappropriate Language or Communication Any other disciplinary action listed on the participation rubrics or covered by the teacher: Not cleaning up at the end of the hour Not spotting a partner in the weight room Lost points cannot be made up. Student Behavior & Discipline Problems

  30. The Final Exam is the culmination of all Presidential Physical Fitness Tests: Students are tested at the beginning of the semester Students are tested again at the end of the semester Students will be tested in five areas of physical fitness: Upper Body Strength… Push Ups Low Back & Abdominal Strength… Sit Ups Agility… Shuttle Run Flexibility… Sit & Reach Cardiovascular Endurance… One Mile Run Fitness Testing

  31. Students are required to participate to the best of their ability on ALL pre and post tests. Students are required to meet or exceed the National Standards for physical fitness These standards are determined by the President’s Council for Physical Fitness, and the standards are based on the student’s age and gender The National Standards represent the 50th Percentile… simply put, we are asking our students to score higher than half of the students their age and gender Some students may encounter difficulty in reaching the National Standards for fitness. Fitness Requirements

  32. Any student that encounters difficulty in meeting the National Standards for physical fitness will have the opportunity to alter the standard(s) by setting a goal. It is the responsibility of the student to set goals that are challenging yet attainable. If agreed upon by the teacher – these goals will alter the curricular standard for that student Important Note: any student who fails to give maximum effort on any of the fitness tests will be prohibited from altering any of the standards. What if I cannot reach the National Standards?

  33. Students can set goals by completing the Fitness Goal Sheet and turning it in on or beforeFriday, February 16 Goal Sheets can be found on our teacher sites. It is important to note that students who set goals must… “Check In” at 7:30am during blended seminar on the following dates: Monday – March 5, 2018 Wednesday – March 28, 2018 Wednesday – May 2, 2018 Re-do each fitness test that they have set a goal for during all three of the “Check In” dates… plan ahead!
