What They Do:

  • Oil and gas well servicers drive trucks and operate specialized hydraulic pumping systems to place concrete in the walls of the well as well as treat the wells with chemicals, sand and gases to stimulate production.


Education, Training and Experience

  • You need Training with an experienced operator

  • You need a community college diploma

  • It really makes a difference if you have experience in this line of work


Work Prospects:

  • The work prospects are fair

  • Employment grew at an above-average rate

  • Hourly wages ($20.78) are above national average (18.07)

  • The unemployment rate is the same as in 2004 (7%)

Oil and Gas Well Drillers


What They Do:

  • Oil and gas drillers assemble pumping equipment and attach pumps and hoses to the well head

  • Operate hydraulic pumping systems to pump chemicals, gas and oil out of the well

  • Read gauges to monitor pressure, density, rate and concentration

  • Align and manipulate sections of pipe or drill stem during removal or replacement of pipes.


Education, Training and Experience

  • Completion of secondary school is required

  • 3 months training with an experienced operator

  • 1 year experience as floorhand, assistant or laborer required

  • Certificates in first aid, hydrogen sulfide awareness, blowout prevention and whmis

  • Hourly wages (20.88) are higher than the national average

  • The unemployment rate (7%) is the same as in 2004
