  1. MESA-MESC Technical Session Digital Spark Technology -By Sourabh Sawant (S.E.Mech.)

  2. What to see? • I C Engine Basic • Spark plug • DTS-i Technology • DTS-Si Technology • Some new technologies MESA-MESC Technical Session

  3. I C Engine • I C Engines ,i.e., Internal Combustion Engines. • Main Types- • SI Engines (Spark Ignition) • CI Engines (Compression Ignition) • Sub Types- • 4 Stroke • 2 Stroke MESA-MESC Technical Session

  4. 4 Stroke SI Engines MESA-MESC Technical Session

  5. Combustion process in SI Engine • Spark Occurs • Flame front moves forward • Combustion of entire mixture, layer by layer occurs • Combustion gets completed MESA-MESC Technical Session

  6. Factors affecting combustion • Velocity of fresh charge • Mixture strength • Ignition timing • Position of spark plug • Presence of hot spots in combustion chamber Proper combustion requires improvement in these aspects MESA-MESC Technical Session

  7. Necessity of D S T For single spark plug problems are: • More ignition timing • Slow combustion rate • Comparatively low effective pressure • High knocking characteristics To improve these facts we use the Digital Spark Technology …….. MESA-MESC Technical Session

  8. 1. • Digital Twin Spark Ignition • Digital -spark generation by a microchip • Twin - two spark plugs • Spark ignition -ignition via a spark •  Introduced in Pulsar 150 model in Year 2003 • Patent -Bajaj Motorcycles, India MESA-MESC Technical Session

  9. Constructional details The construction of DTS-i engine is same as that of the conventional 4-Stroke engine. It consists of following parts: • Piston • Cylinder • Crankshaft • Connecting rod • Fly wheel • Carburettor ,etc. only change made is that the use of 2 sparkplugs and 4 valves MESA-MESC Technical Session

  10. 4 Valves • 2 Spark Plugs MESA-MESC Technical Session

  11. Combustion process with DTS-i • Fresh charge is compressed during the compression stroke • A spark will be ignited by one spark plug • Another spark will be ignited by another spark plug as per control of the microprocessor or Digital electronic control box (DEC) • Areas that are not covered by the first flame front will be covered by second flame front • After power stroke, exhaust is done MESA-MESC Technical Session

  12. Combustion process with DTS-i • Resulting in the complete & rapid combustion of the fuel MESA-MESC Technical Session

  13. Advantages of DTS-i • Decrease in ignition timing • Comparatively more power is produced • Less vibrations and noise • Long life of the engine parts such as piston rings and valve stem. • Decrease in the fuel consumption • No over heating MESA-MESC Technical Session

  14. Advantages of DTS-i • Increase the Efficiency of the Engine & even bear high loads on it • Better starting of engine even in winter season & cold climatic conditions or at very low temperatures • Better work output • Less emissions MESA-MESC Technical Session

  15. Statistics showing adv. of DTS-i MESA-MESC Technical Session

  16. Disadvantages of DTS-i • If one spark plug get damaged then we have to replace both • The cost is relatively more • The engine tends to overheat and loose power at higher speeds as compared to a single plug engine • In case the Engine is kept unused for a long time, soiling of spark plugs occur • It does not deliver any better mileage and acceleration than that derived from a single spark plug. MESA-MESC Technical Session

  17. Bikes using DTS-i • Some of Bajaj bikes • Discover 150 , Pulsar 135 , 150 , 180 , 200 , 220 ,etc. MESA-MESC Technical Session

  18. 2. DTS-Si technology • Digital Twin Spark -Swirl Induction • Combination of DTS-i and Swirl induction • Introduced in XCD 125 in Year 2007 • Patent – Bajaj motorcycles, India MESA-MESC Technical Session

  19. Constructional details • The construction of DTS-Si engine is same as that of the DTS-i engine. • The difference is of : • Offset port configuration • Position of 2 Spark plugs MESA-MESC Technical Session

  20. DTS-i technology • DTS-Si technology MESA-MESC Technical Session

  21. Swirl Induction • Swirl Induction is nothing but imparting a swirling motion to the fresh charge that enters the combustion chamber • It is done for producing higher turbulence in the combustion chamber • This can be done by making slight modifications in the ports positioning of engine MESA-MESC Technical Session

  22. Need for Swirl Induction • Low turbulence: • give rise to propagation of a flame front, which is in the manner of a gradually expanding balloon • slower rate of combustion • slower rate of pressure rise • lower efficiency • High turbulence: • surface of the ballooning flame front fragments itself, with projection like fingers • increases its surface area • Improves combustion MESA-MESC Technical Session

  23. Improvement of combustion • Use of an offset port configuration • this results in a swirling motion of the incoming charge, which decays itself into turbulence as the piston moves • results in the proper mixing of Air-Fuel mixture and spread around the combustion chamber • Sparks provided by the twin spark plugs ignite this mixture • leading to a flame front with high surface area • resulting in a rapid rise of pressure due to rapid combustion • resulting in high efficiency MESA-MESC Technical Session

  24. Advantages of DTS-Si over DTS-i • Less Spark timing • Rapid combustion • Development of more pressure • More efficiency • Combustion efficiency in lean Air-Fuel mixture conditions is improved MESA-MESC Technical Session

  25. Bikes using DTS-Si • Some Bajaj bikes • XCD 125 , XCD 135 , Platina 125 ,etc. MESA-MESC Technical Session

  26. Some other vehicles with Twin spark • Mercedes Benz MU20 (6 Cylinder engine) • Honda city (4 Cylinder engine) • TVS 125cc model • Royal Enfield These vehicles have their own versions of the twin spark technology. MESA-MESC Technical Session

  27. Some advance technologies…. • DTS-Fi -Used in Pulsar 220 • DTS-i ( Triple Spark ) -Used in new Pulsar 200NS MESA-MESC Technical Session

  28. Conclusion Application of these technologies in the present day automobiles will give us power bikes with fuel efficiency. Since these technologies also minimize the fuel consumption and harmful emission levels, they can also be considered as one of the solutions for increasing fuel costs and increasing effect of global warming. We can hope for still better technologies, which can achieve still better results because “there is no end for innovation” MESA-MESC Technical Session
