  3. Vietnam War • The French colonized Vietnam • In 1945 Vietnam was divided (at the 17th parallel) temporarily until democratic elections took place • This never happened because North Vietnam became communist and south Vietnam remained somewhat democratic • So why did the USA get involved • The USA felt that they needed to CONTAIN communism; Keep communism from spreading • USA sent them money, supplies and military equipment

  4. Domino Theory • President Eisenhower came up with the idea • Created to defend his support of USA involvement in Vietnam • Theory/Idea that if Vietnam fell to communism, all of ASIA would fall to communism =communism spread • Johnson quote, “ If you let a bully come into your front garden one day, the next day he’ll be up on your porch, and the day after that he’ll rape your wife in your bed.”

  5. Tonkin Gulf Resolution • President Johnson • Announced that 2 American destroyers had been fired at by the Vietcong (communist in north Vietnam • 2 days later it happened again • He asked congress to give him the power to use force against Vietcong • He ordered Americans aircraft to attack • (He failed to tell congress the USA had been helping south Vietnam spy and raid against North Vietnam) • August 7, 1964 congress passed Gulf of Tonkin Resolution • Congress handed over all its war powers to the president • “take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the force of the US and to prevent further aggression” • Johnson sends the first troops into Vietnam with the authority of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

  6. Americans protest the Vietnam war • All American leaders stated the war would be over soon • American army leaders felt that the USA was stronger than the Vietcong, therefore the war would be over soon • The Vietnam war was the first war televised • Americans watched soldiers and Vietnam civilians massacred nightly • Nov. 1969: An army platoon massacred 200 unarmed south Vietnamese civilians (old men, women, young children) • 2/3 of Americans wanted America out of the war • Americans protested by • Peace movement (flower children/ woodstalk /hippies-make peace not war) • teach-ins (college campus) • Draft burning • Issues over the fact that 18 yr olds could go to war but not vote = 26 amendment, voting age moved to 18 • African Americans protest • Highest number of Americans dying were African Americans

  7. End of Vietnam War • Nixon and both leaders of North and South Vietnam signed an agreement to end the war on January 27, 1973 • American troops left • BY march 1975, North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam • Effects of war on America • 170 billion wasted on war • 58,000 Americans died • Soldiers who lived faced psychological problems • Americans lost faith in their government • South Vietnam fell to communism so the war was seen as a waste of time, money and lives

  8. Salt 1 • President Nixon (1964) and Brezhnez of the Soviet Union met in Moscow to discuss the arms race of nuclear weapons • Both leaders signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty = SALT 1

  9. Nuclear Freeze • President Regan put Nuclear missiles in Western Europe to counter Soviet missiles aimed at Europe • Protesters (10,000+) protested this↑ • President Regan agreed to cancel the shipment of Missiles if the Soviet Union removed their missiles • The soviets refused and walked out of the Peace Talks • President Regan felt that if a Nuclear attack happened … the USA could not defend it’s self so he created “strategic Defense Initiative = Star Wars • Weapons to intercept and destroy incoming missiles • New missiles were developed that were very advanced • December 1991 Soviet Union collapsed = end of cold war
