  1. A Symbol of Myself Students will reflect on their unique selves. create a clay "symbol" that represents themselves. write an explanation that tells about the symbol and why they chose it.

  2. Review Symbol • What is a symbol? Can you give some examples of symbols? What are some symbols that are often used to represent the United States (or your home country)? What symbols might be used to represent your state? your school? What were some symbols used in the stories we have read recently?

  3. A Symbol of Yourself • What might be a symbol for you. Think about the things you love, believe in, the type of person you are.

  4. Something to think about • a baseball might represent your passion for playing and watching the game; • an ear might represent that you think your ability to listen to people is one of your best personal qualities; • a measuring cup might represent your favorite pastime -- cooking; • a rocking chair might represent your love of family (the chair has been passed down from generation to generation); or • a bird might represent your love of nature.

  5. Some symbols are literal (the baseball), but some are more abstract like the ear symbolizing your ability to listen to others. • After you have had a chance to consider the things you might use as symbols of yourselves, you will use clay to create the symbol. Clay MUST not leave the classroom! • After you have created your symbol, write 1 – 2 paragraphs (7 – 8 sentences) explaining how this object symbolizes you. Write this on a ½ piece of paper to be displayed with your creation.
