Focus on three areas • Perception of the industry • Work Ready attitude • Skills – capacity to develop skills
Tourism and the visitor economy • Sector contributes £143bn in GVA • Between 2008 and 2011 GVA contributions increased by 12 percent • Workforce of 5.8m – one in five of the UK workforce • Need to recruit 1.7m employees in the next seven years

Skills lacking in applicants • Job-specific skills (including a significant percentage of culinary skills for chefs) • Inter-personal skills or softer skills, such as communication, customer service and team working • Management and leadership skills
Perception of the industry • 41% of employers arranged or funded staff training in the last 12 months • We spend more than average across the economy
Work ready attitude • 65% of training activity in the sector was induction training • Only 15% of skilled trades such as chefs received training • How much training can show a real return on investment?
