  1. Service Oriented Architecture: Does it enable IT tointeract with business in the most effective way? A Position Paper By: Pallavi Parthasarathi Pappathi Thangadurai Course: CS 575

  2. Our Position • In this paper we examine the claims of the supporters and detractors of SOA and assert the reasons that we believe that SOA is the most advantageous and efficient way available to intertwine business and IT.

  3. Introduction • SOA is the new buzzword surrounding web architecture approaches • Service oriented architecture can be simply defined as a collection of services. These services communicate with each other. • It is the current approach to design of distributed computing architectures in which software resources, viewed as unique, self-contained Services, are integrated through standards-based connections.

  4. SOA Offers Competitive Advantages • Flexibility. • Loose Coupling. • Ease of communication across different platforms. • Makes system more open to the integration of new components and services. • “Seamless integration”

  5. Effective intertwine of Business and IT The challenge for IT today is to create and support an infrastructure that is capable of harnessing the diverse heterogeneous technology assets, and to deliver on new business requirements more effectively. SOA enables this due to the following functionalities.

  6. Limitations of Service Oriented Architecture • SOA requires additional costs due to design and development efforts and the added infrastructure. • SOA is also not ideal for standalone non distributed applications that don’t require application integration, or where loose coupling is unnecessary or not wanted. • SOA needs complex service arbitration and management of the high number of clients to the system tends to be very complex. • These management issues also make SOA too expensive for some small projects.

  7. Conclusion Here we have discussed the use of SOA for large multi dimensional businesses that need the high flexibility and reusability that SOA can offer and conclude that SOA is the most advantageous architecture that enables IT to interact with business in the most effective way.
