  3. Mexican – American War • US sent army led by Zachary Taylor to Rio Grande • Mexicans attack the US army • South and west support war • northeast opposed it • Did not want more slave territory

  4. End of War • Taylor invaded Mexico from Texas • General Winfield Scott – invade Veracruz • Mexico City falls in September 1847

  5. John Fremont Stephen Kearny New Mexico and California • John Fremont led a rebellion of Americans in California against Mexico in 1846 • By 1847, United States controlled California • Stephen Kearny attacked Santa Fe New Mexico from Kansas • Continued to California

  6. End of Mexican American War Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848 Mexico recognize Rio Grande as southern border of Texas Mexico recognize Texas as part of United States US give Mexico $15 million
