  3. Mexican – American War • US sent army led by Zachary Taylor to Rio Grande • Mexicans attack the US army • South and west support war • northeast opposed it • Did not want more slave territory

  4. End of War • Taylor invaded Mexico from Texas • General Winfield Scott – invade Veracruz • Mexico City falls in September 1847

  5. John Fremont Stephen Kearny New Mexico and California • John Fremont led a rebellion of Americans in California against Mexico in 1846 • By 1847, United States controlled California • Stephen Kearny attacked Santa Fe New Mexico from Kansas • Continued to California
