  1. Commercial thinning operations in regrowth eucalypt forests Presentation to Australian Flexible Learning Framework eLearning08 Ian McLeod - Project Facilitator

  2. Southern Training Organisation • Based in Eden NSW • Project Category • Empowering learners and RTO business partnership • Project Partners • Forests NSW • South East Fibre Exports • South East Timber Association • Blue Ridge Hardwoods • Boral Timber • Project developers • Workspace Training

  3. The issue that needed addressing • Enormous changes in forest harvesting practices • Literacy problems among trainee operators • Remote locations • Using up valuable face-to face training time on background knowledge rather than practical skills • Difficulty in staying up to date with latest industry developments • The solution • Delivering background knowledge training via e-learning, using an interactive CD format to present the subject matter

  4. Most significant impacts of the project • Huge saving in valuable face-to-face training time • Operators can learn at their own pace due to easy to understand, literacy assisted presentation style • Facility for providing training in new harvesting techniques that minimise forest damage and waste, and maximise timber output into the future

  5. Advice to other RTOs • Don’t be over ambitious in your expectations • Plan well • Engage industry experts at the outset • Develop a story board to guide the process of development • Apply for funding from Australian Flexible Learning Framework
