  1. Men of Science/ Men of God J. T. Keiser “Science and the Bible” March 3rd and 4th, 2007 Washington D.C.

  2. Men of Science/ Men of God:Great Scientists Who Believed in the BibleBy Henry M. Morris, 1982 "It is completely wrong for people to assume - as they often do - that a true scientist cannot simultaneously be a true man of God, believing in God as Creator and Savior and believing the Bible as God’s revelation. As a matter of fact, many scientists of the past and present have been and are Bible-believing Christians.” Morris, pg. vii “True science is never at enmity with God, and a true man of science can and should also be a true man of God.” Morris, pg. xii

  3. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god: either his is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. I Kings 18:27 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead Romans 1:20

  4. Isaac Newton (1642-1727) • English physicist • Mathematician • Astronomer

  5. The unifying and predictive power of his laws was central to the scientific revolution, and the notion that rational investigation can reveal the inner workings of nature. • Optics • Invented the reflecting telescope • Developed a theory of color based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into the colors of the rainbow • Physics • Described the law of gravity and the laws of motion • Proved that the same laws that governed the motion of objects on earth, govern the motion of objects in the heavens He has been called, “the greatest scientific genius who ever lived.” • Enunciated the principles of conservation of momentum and angular momentum • Developed the field of calculus Isaac Newton’s Notebook

  6. Isaac Newton’s attitude toward God’s Word: “I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by those who were inspired. I study the Bible daily.”

  7. This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being… This Being governs all things, not as the soul of the world, but as Lord over all; and on account of his dominion he is wont to be called “Lord God”… or “Universal Ruler”… The Supreme God is a Being eternal, infinite, absolutely perfect.” The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto [after] night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Psalms 19:1-3

  8. “Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion. God governs all things and knows all that is or can be done.”

  9. For there are three that bear record [in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three agree in one. And there are three that bear witness in earth,] the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. I John 5:7-8 Published “An Historical Account of Two Notable Corruptions of Scripture” – reviewed all of the textual evidence available from ancient sources on two disputed Bible passages, I John 5:7-8, and I Timothy 3:16

  10. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God [“God” should be “which”] was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. I Timothy 3:16

  11. Isaac Newton (1642-1727) • English physicist • Mathematician • Astronomer Bible Believer

  12. George Washington Carver (1864-1943) • Businessman • Artist • Medical Worker • Humanitarian • Reformer • American • Chemist • Botanist • Soil Scientist • Food Scientist • Geneticist • Teacher • Inventor

  13. Short Bio of George Washington Carver • Born as a slave in 1864 near Diamond Grove, Missouri, on the farm of Moses Carver • There, he fell in love with nature, collected all manner of rocks and plants, and earned the nickname, ‘The Plant Doctor’ • He began his formal education at the age of 12, which required him to leave the home of his adopted parents • At the age of 30, Carver was the first Black student accepted to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. • Later transferred to Iowa Agricultural College (now Iowa State University) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1894 and a Master of Science degree in Bacterial Botany and Agriculture in 1896 • In 1897, Booker T. Washington, founder of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes, convinced Carver to come south and serve as the school’s Director of Agriculture. Carver remained on faculty until his death in 1943.

  14. “All my life,” he said, “I have risen regularly at four o’clock and have gone into the woods and talked with God. There he gives me my orders for the day. Alone there with things I love most, I gather specimens and study the great lessons Nature is so eager to teach us all. When people are still asleep, I hear God best and learn my plan.”

  15. “Ask for something more in keeping with that little mind of yours,” He replied. He replied that my mind was too small to know all about the peanut, but He said He would give me a handful of peanuts. “Little man, you still want to know too much.” Then I told the creator I wanted to know all about the peanut. I asked the Creator what the universe was made for. “What was man made for?

  16. I carried the peanuts into my laboratory and the Creator told me to take them apart and resolve them into their elements.

  17. Which such knowledge as I had of chemistry and physics I set to work to take them apart.

  18. I separated the water, the fats, the oils, the gums, the resins, sugars starches, pectoses, pentosans, amino acids.

  19. There! I had the parts of the peanuts all spread out before me.

  20. The Creator said, “I have given you three laws; namely, compatibility, temperature, and pressure. All you have to do is take these constituents and put them together, observing these laws, and I will show you why I made the peanut.” “Now, you know what the peanut is.” I looked at Him and He looked at me. “Why did you make the peanut?”

  21. I therefore went on to try different combinations of the parts under different conditions of temperature and pressure, and the result was what you see.

  22. Diesel fuel Leather dyes Shampoo Metal polish Paper Peanut Butter Toilet soap Instant coffee Laxatives Salad oil Wood stains Plastics Illuminating oil Paint Linoleum Soil conditioner Cherry punch Worcestershire sauce George Washington Carver developed over 300 products from the peanut including: Glue Axle grease Goiter treatment Mayonnaise Ink Pancake flour Cooking oil Quinine Shaving cream Rubbing oil Wall board Charcoal Rubber Oleomargarine Fuel bricks Insecticide Gasoline Evaporated milk Nitroglycerine

  23. As I worked on projects which fulfilled a real human need, forces were working through me which amazed me. I would often go to sleep with an apparently insoluble problem. When I awoke the answer was there. Why, then, should we who believe in Christ be so surprised of what God can do with a willing man and a laboratory.

  24. The Farmers’ Institute (Minutes from a meeting on May 27, 1904) Opened with singing, “Father, I Stretch My Hand to Thee.” There followed a Scripture lesson, prayer, and other song, “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed.” Then came a little talk on “How and why we grow cowpeas.”…

  25. The Jesup Wagon

  26. Winner of the Roosevelt medal in 1939 for Outstanding Contribution to Southern Agriculture with the following citation: “To a scientist humbly seeking the guidance of God, and a liberator to men of the white race, as well as the black.”

  27. George Washington Carver (1864-1943) • Chemist • Botanist • Soil Scientist • Food Scientist • Geneticist • Teacher • Inventor • Businessman • Artist • Medical Worker • Humanitarian • Reformer • American and a Man of God

  28. “God is going to reveal to us things He never revealed before if we put our hands in His.” G.W. Carver
