STAGE 1 – Archiving Strategy

Engaging with MEDIN

  • Identify a practical approach to the deposition of a range of marine digital datasets acquired for archaeological purposesaccording to MEDIN priorities

  • Develop a model of data flow which meets the archival requirements of the heritage sector

STAGE 1 – Archiving Strategy

Engaging with MEDIN

  • Identify a practical approach to the deposition of a range of marine digital datasets acquired for archaeological purposes according to MEDIN priorities

  • Develop a model of data flow which meets the archival requirements of the heritage sector

    • DACs and data types

    • Primary and secondary archives

– splitting archives

– duplicating archives

Archive scenario 1 - England

Archive scenario 2 - Scotland

STAGE 2 – Data Preparation

Assessment of archiving process, practicalities of data preparation and generation of metadata

39 datasets from 5 surveys

Preparation according to the specific requirements of the different archive centres

Geophysical/geotechnical datasets – 1.5 days per survey

Diving/ROV datasets – 3 days per survey

Conclusions

The need for an archiving strategy to be incorporated/specified at the outset

Dataset granularity, duplication of effort and metadata translation tools
