  1. Personal Hygiene

  2. What is puberty? • Time of change from child to adult • When the body reaches maturity • Physical and emotional changes occur • Bodies develop and become fertile

  3. Personal Hygiene and Puberty • Changes with puberty • skin and hair get oily • new hair growth • more sweat and a smell (body odor) • Important part of being healthy • Helps you feel good and shows your best you

  4. Clean Hair • Oil, sweat and dead skin cells make your hair look greasy and causes it to smell • Hair follicles make oil to keep your hair soft • Your scalp has sweat glands and sheds dead skin cells • Wash your hair every day or every other day to control oily hair and stop it from smelling • Use warm water and a small amount of shampoo to make a foam in your hair as you wash and massage your scalp well

  5. Healthy Skin • Oilier skin • face • back • Acne • oil and dirt builds up in pores of the skin which can lead to acne Ways to help • Wash your face once or twice a day • Use warm water and mild soap • Don’t squeeze, pick or pop pimples

  6. Smelling Clean Sweat glands • become more active • produces sweat (perspiration) Body odor: • Results when sweat comes into contact with bacteria on the skin • Bacteria grows in sweaty places • armpits, genitals and on your feet

  7. Smelling Clean • Bathe/shower every day with mild soap and warm water • Deodorant can help control odor and antiperspirant reduces the amount of sweat from our armpits

  8. Teeth • Brush after meals and before going to bed each day • Prevents cavities • Keeps smelly bacteria from growing in your mouth • Swish water to remove food from your mouth if you cannot brush after lunch

  9. Teeth • A clean mouth smells nice when talking to others • 2 for 2 is what you do!

  10. Clean Clothes • Change clothes and undergarments every day because of more sweating during puberty • Undergarments collect the most dead skin cells, sweat and other personal excretions • Clothes start to smell as bacteria grow on the sweaty parts

  11. Shoes and Feet • Feet have the largest collection of sweat glands • Shoes and socks are the perfect place for sweat and bacteria to make odor • Wash your feet daily • Dry your feet before putting on socks • Wear clean socks • Keep your shoes clean • Remove your shoes at home to let them air out

  12. Hand Washing Important Part of Being Clean!

  13. Personal Hygiene It’s a big deal! With a clean body, clean hair, clean clothes and shoes, you will feel good about yourself and your friends will be happy to be near you too!
