  6. Why was there a witch hunter craze? In England witch hunting was at its height by 1640’s. A young man, Matthew Hopkins, claimed he found 36 witches at work near Ipswich. They were all arrested and, under torture, most of them admitted that they were witches. 34 were found guilty and 18 were executed. What evidence was there? Read through the sources and complete the table. Do you think the women were guilty? Why?
