A Quick Timeline 1931 – Japan begins to expand their territorial holdings July 1937 – Japan invades China 1939 – Cash and carry policy takes effect 1940 – Germany, Italy and Japan sign the Tripartite Pact 1940 – Selective Training and Service Act is passed by Congress March 1941 – Lend-Lease Act is passed June 1941 – Hitler invades Soviet Union July 1941 – Japan takes control of French Indochina Summer 1941 – US imposes a trade embargo on Japan (Oil is primary target) September 1941 – German U-Boat attacks increase December 1941 – Japan attacks Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor • This is a failure of epic proportions • US knows of plans to attack here in January of 1941 • Hideki Tojo takes control in October 1941 • We ignored many warning signs • US had broken their secret code • We know what they are planning • Japanese fleet leaves Japan on November 25th, 1941 • Peace talks break down in December 1941 • What happens on December 7th is nothing short of a disaster

  7. “A date which will live in infamy” • Six aircraft carries with 180 planes attack at 7:55 AM • There are two separate attacks (8:55 AM) • Attacks on other bases on Oahu as well • The entire attack lasts less than two hours • The aftermath: • 2,403 dead • 1,178 wounded • 21 ships sunk or damaged • 300 aircraft damaged or destroyed • Three aircraft carries did escape
