  2. Basic Info. - Osteoporosis • When someone has Osteoporosis, thier bones become fragile and break very easily. • Osteoporosis has been around for thousands of years. • Osteoporosis is curable.

  3. Symptoms of Osteoporosis • pain, gradual loss of hieght, backache, sudden or severe back pain, fractures in the spinal cord, fractures in the hip, fractures in the wrist, dental x-rays that indicate loss of bone in the jaw • Be concerend after 3 months. 

  4. Symptoms • Genetic family history : as well as mutations in the VDR gene, ER gene, COLIA 1 and COLIA 2 genes. • Environmental risk factors : excessive alchohol use, smoking, inadequate physical exercise, and prolonged use of steroids, antacids,and anticonvulsants.

  5. Treating  Osteoporosis • Calcium-rich diet • Salt, soda, caffine • Exercise will help stop elederly women form having spinal problems and many broken bones. • Painkillers

  6. Managing Osteoporosis •  It is possible to get rid of Osteoporosis       *Goes by age       *maintaining a calcium-rich diet and          exercising often • Osteoporosis comes in later life • Easy to deal with • May not  go away

  7. Impact of Osteoporosis • Family support is encoured     *does not effect the seriousness of the disease • The impact that has on an individual is that it stops him/her form playing tackling sports (ex: football and hockey) • The impact that Osteoporosis has on parents of a child with Osteoporosis, is that they have to pay more to cover the cost of the bill when they have very frequent check-ups.

  8. Wow • Bones build between the ages of 10 and 20 •  Most common in 30yr. women •  Osteoporosis = result of negative calcium balance 

  9. Statistics • Around 200 million people have Osteoporosis.         *10% are 60 years old         *20% are 70 years old         *40% are 80 years old         *60% are 90 years old
