  3. 2.0 MALAWI’S HIV AND AIDS PROFILE • HIV prevalence rate is 12% • Over 1 million people living with the virus • About 500,000 children orphaned due to HIV and AIDS • As at 31st March 2010 • 371 sites providing ART (313 public and 58 private) • 211, 246 people on ART (198, 642 public and 12,604 private)

  4. 3.0 PRIVATE SECTOR HIV AND AIDS RESPONSE • The MBCA was incorporated under the Trustees Act of Malawi in 2005 and is registered with CONGOMA • Umbrella body mandated by the private sector and government to coordinate the private sector HIV and AIDS response • Mission is to mobilize, coordinate and advocate for the development and implementation of HIV and AIDS policies and programmes that ensures the sustenance of businesses and lives of employees and their families in Malawi

PRIVATE SECTOR HIV AND AIDS RESPONSE (cont…) • Membership of 78 companies and SMEs • Mobilization and coordination of the private sector HIV and AIDS response • Capacity building of the private sector to effectively mainstream HIV and AIDS • Coordination of the private sector ART programme • Monitoring and evaluation of private sector response • Advocacy and representation.

  6. 4.0 NATIONAL OWNERSHIP OF HIV AND AIDS RESPONSE • GoM providing overall policy framework and direction. Ownership of the national response occurs when countries exercise effective leadership over their development policies, strategies and coordinate development actions (Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, 2005). • Active and meaningful participation of all stakeholders. • Local financing of HIV/AIDS response. • Institutionalization and mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS. • Organizational and institutional capacity building.

  7. 5.0 CONCLUSION • The private sector in Malawi is making a strong contribution to country’s overall HIV and AIDS response. • The private sector can greatly contribute to the national ownership of the HIV and AIDS response. • Need to own HIV and AIDS response for programme long term sustainability.
