  2. How a Character is Revealed • Directly: the narrator or author explains explicitly or directly • Indirectly: • Thoughts or feelings • Interactions with other characters • His or her actions • What other characters say about this person

Example: Clarisse • Directly: • “Well… I’m seventeen and I’m crazy” (7). • Why/how is this a direct characterization? • Indirectly: • “What incredible power of identification the girl had…” (11). • Why/how is this indirect characterization? • Can you find one more example of each for Clarisse?

  4. Flat vs. Round Character • Flat (static): two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work. • Round (dynamic): complex and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader. • We will talk about this as we learn more about our characters in the novel 
