  1. Testbeam HCAL Main meeting at DESY April 28, 2005 HCAL Main Meeting

  2. Sites • DESY • Fermilab • CERN HCAL Main Meeting

  3. DESY testbeam • Shutdown mid November – mid December • ECAL plans • Run in June: “probability is very weak” (JCB) due to delays in wafer delivery • Request run November or later • HCAL options • 1st cassette end May • Up to 3 layers in existing stack possible • Needs mass-produced electronics (August or later) • Larger stack in final stack support with ~ 10-15 layers • To be evaluated • Cosmics with full stack and NIU trigger layers HCAL Main Meeting

  4. Fermilab testbeam • Visit on March 16 • Close collaboration with FNAL engineers • Installation problems can be solved • Solution for RPC electronics found HCAL Main Meeting

  5. Tail Catcher HCAL Electronic Racks ECAL Beam CALICE Setup V-Trial at FNAL MTBF HCAL Main Meeting

  6. Planning Document to FNAL • Initial draft written at the ANL workshop in Sept. • As agreed at ECFA meeting • Result of the World-wide LC CAL/Muon TB Working Group • Many thanks…. • Total of 25 pages w/ • Overview of TB plans and requirements • Will be followed by detailed MOUs • Submitted to FNAL on Feb. 22, 2005 J. Repond HCAL Main MeetingTB Summary, LCWS2005 J. Yu, UTA

  7. Duty cycle HCAL Main Meeting

  8. Other limitations HCAL Main Meeting

  9. Other possibilities • Fermilab beam line M-center • Is shorter, higher rates at low energies • same spill structure • MIPP continuation not approved, but other parties show interest, too. • Details being investigated • CERN • SPS will run in 2006 (May - ) • Informal contacts • Details being investigated HCAL Main Meeting

  10. Detector R&D: Packed agendas • 36 talks on calorimetry and muons (16 at LC99 Sitges) • 32 talks on tracking and vertexing (13 at LC99 Sitges) • 25 talks on simulation and reconstruction • 20 talks on machine detector interface • 15 talks on DAQ • 7 talks on testbeam We know the bunch structure now HCAL Main Meeting

  11. Calorimeter R&D • ECAL: main option Si W • Demonstrate feasibility of ultra-compact systems • CALICE test beam at DESY • SLAC Oregon test wafers • Korean groups testbeam at CERN • HCAL: gaseous or scintillator, • Understand hadron showers • Gaseous: RPC and GEM R&D • Scintillator: Prototype construction at DESY • Photodector R&D • Hamamatsu SiPMs, • Colorado 7 pixel counters • Particle flow • Not yet converging HCAL Main Meeting

  12. Barry Barish to lead GDE First statements on timeline of GDE • Snowmass (2nd ILC meeting) is important • Fix ILC baseline configuration • Yet, keep open for improvements • CDR target date: end of 2006 • But: with price tag • Site dependent: sample sites • Understand geological / political constraints • TDR in 2008 HCAL Main Meeting

  14. Where we are Entering the prototype mass production stage • SiPMs from main batch on tiles • Mass-produced front end ASICs • Commission readout chain with final electronics • Optimize calibration system • Cassette No. 1 plus front end prototype to test beam HCAL Main Meeting

  15. Things to come • Software! • Comes with testbeam • Scheduling • Next months: establish a smooth production chain • Adjust start-up and laminar stream (SiPMs, tiles, cassettes) • Test beam planning • Other talk • R&D planning • Other meeting • Organizational: • Cost to completion review in May (DESY) • CALICE technical review in (beginning of) October • CALICE @ DESY PRC on November 10 HCAL Main Meeting
