  1. BIG PICTURE How can I heat up my assessments?

  2. Making Good Assessments • What documents do I need when creating assessments? • APCC • GLEs • Big Picture • Guiding Questions • What format should I use when creating assessments? • The more GEE like the better! • What types of questions should be included on my assessments? • Multiple Choice • Constructed Response

  3. Making Good Assessments • What are the parts of a multiple choice item?

  4. Making Good Assessments • What are the parts of a multiple choice item? • 1. Stem • Foundation of the item • States the problem

  5. Making Good Assessments • What are the parts of a multiple choice item? • 1. Stem • How do I create a good stem? • CLEARLY state the problem/question • Don’t use ambiguous wording • Do not include irrelevant information • Emphasize qualifiers such as EXCEPT and BEST in the stem item.

  6. Making Good Assessments • What are the parts of a multiple choice item? • 2. Alternatives • Answer • Distractors • What is the purpose of a distractor? • Distractors should appear to be plausible answers for students who have NOT met the objective. • Conversely, distracters will appear as implausible for those students who HAVE met the objective.

  7. Making Good Assessments • How do I create good alternatives (answers and distractors)? • Write the answer first, then create the distractors • Only provide plausible distractors. • Alternatives should be similar in length. • Provide alternatives in logical order • Ex: Dates, events, steps in a process • Avoid using “all of the above,” “none of the above,” “always,” and “never” • Avoid textbook or verbatim phrasing • Avoid clues in the answer choices that give away the correct response. • Make sure that the correct response is the ONLY correct response.

  8. Making Good Assessments •  How can I heat up my multiple choice questions? • Write the item with a specific objective and GLE in mind • ALIGNMENT! • The level of multiple choice items can be controlled by modifying the stem and alternatives. • Take it to the next level

  9. Making Good Assessments • Abbott with examples

  10. Making Good Assessments • This sounds like an awful lot…it’s okay • Take it one assessment at a time…select a handful of questions to improve on each assessment • Research and utilize resources • Collaborate • Practice, practice, practice Why not start now. 
